Company: Montefiore Wellness Center
Location: Yonkers, New York, United States
Arun George Prasad, MD, medical director of addiction psychology at the Montefiore Wellness Center, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in addiction psychiatry.
Despite being relatively early in his professional life, Dr. Prasad has already made a noticeable impact in the field, driven by a family history of medical expertise. He spent time in multiple countries growing up, including the United Kingdom, the Middle East and India, where his parents are retired physicians. After completing the early steps of his education, Dr. Prasad decided to join his sister, who was already a practicing doctor in the United States. He initially immigrated to become a researcher in psychiatry at Saint Louis University while pursuing continued academic work.
Showcasing an impressive level of mastery even at his young age, Dr. Prasad accepted the position of medical director of addiction psychiatry at the Montefiore Wellness Center in 2024. Based at Waters Place and part of the Montefiore Einstein Health System, the Montefiore Wellness Center is associated with the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Prasad specializes in working with adult and adolescent patients who are diagnosed with both psychiatric illnesses and substance use disorder. He collaborates with counselors to manage medication while having insight into individual and group psychotherapy for patients. Additionally, Dr. Prasad utilizes cutting-edge approaches to treatment-resistant depression, such as transcranial magnetic stimulation, ketamine therapy and deep brain stimulation. He also aids in training new medical students and psychiatry practitioners.
Dr. Prasad first sought an education in his home country of India, earning an MD from Jubilee Mission Medical College and Research Institute in 2015. Following his move to the U.S., he worked at Zucker Hillside Hospital and the Long Island Jewish Medical Center through Northwell Health as part of a clinical externship in psychiatry in 2019. Dr. Prasad went on to complete a residency in general psychiatry with the Bronxcare Health System in 2023 and a fellowship in addiction psychiatry with Mount Sinai West and Mount Sinai Morningside in 2024, both through the Icahn School of Medicine. He is board certified in general psychiatry, general adult psychiatry and addiction psychiatry through the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and in transcranial magnetic stimulation through the Duke University Health System.
Dedicated to civic advocacy, Dr. Prasad finds ways to contribute to his community above and beyond his primary vocation. In particular, he devotes time to mentoring through the Montefiore Health System’s fellowship training program. Dr. Prasad has volunteered his expertise, having performed examinations for uninsured and undocumented individuals through the National Kidney Foundation Inc. Some of his previous civic engagements include counseling family members of patients with psychiatric illnesses through the Mood Disorder Support Group of Long Island, working as an assistant counselor with the Long Island Crisis Center and volunteering with Project Downtown St. Louis.
Though he’s only in the early stages of his career, Dr. Prasad has already received significant praise. Most notably, he was presented with the John Renner Travel Award from the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry in 2023, which he considers to be the greatest highlight of his professional life thus far. Related to this accolade, the Academy sponsored Dr. Prasad’s travel to give a conference presentation entitled “Treating Our Own,” where he explored challenges, methodologies and ethics related to treating a patient with substance use disorder.
In considering his success, Dr. Prasad points to his emotional quotient (EQ), which he considers much more important to his accomplishments than his IQ. He emphasizes the importance of knowing how to relate with patients and how to present complex topics to them in an understandable way. As he moves forward in his career, Dr. Prasad hopes to get more involved with interventional psychiatry. He also is eager for more opportunities to collaborate with clinics that could benefit from the insight of an addiction psychiatrist.
