Dr. Lewis, an esteemed physician, has dedicated his life to advancing medical science and education. His remarkable career, which has spanned decades, has been marked by significant contributions to academia, clinical practice and law. Now self-employed and based in South Florida, Dr. Lewis is widely known in the medical field for his expertise in otolaryngology, a medical specialty that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of conditions affecting the ears, nose, throat and other areas of the head and neck.
As an otolaryngologist, or ear, nose and throat (ENT) doctor, Dr. Lewis worked in various capacities throughout his tenure in medicine. He served on the medical staff at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia and Lankenau Medical Center in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania, before becoming the president of the medical staff at Lankenau. Notably, Lankenau Medical Center has been recognized among the top-ranked hospitals in the Philadelphia region.
Beyond his clinical work, Dr. Lewis excelled in various academic roles, including professorships at Thomas Jefferson University in Woodbury, New Jersey, and in Drexel University’s College of Medicine in Philadelphia. Additionally, he was an adjunct professor at the College of Physicians of Philadelphia.
Born in McKeesport, Pennsylvania, Dr. Lewis studied locally, earning a bachelor’s degree from Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, in 1966. He then pursued his medical degree at Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University, graduating with an MD, with honors. Dr. Lewis’ surgical residency at the University of Wisconsin-Madison from 1970 to 1972 was followed by specialization in otolaryngology and head and neck surgery at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, which he completed in 1975.
Dr. Lewis’ educational pursuits did not end with medicine. He earned a Doctor of Jurisprudence, with honors, from the Commonwealth Law School at Widener University in Chester, Pennsylvania, and a Master of Business Administration with a specialization in health care business from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. These qualifications enhanced his effectiveness on medical boards and broadened his professional scope.
Active in his professional community, Dr. Lewis has served as the president of the Delaware County Medical Society. Civically, he has been instrumental on the Lankenau Medical Center Foundation board, has organized initiatives providing free medical care to children in need throughout Philadelphia, and has contributed to fundraising efforts for ambulances abroad in Israel. These humanitarian efforts earned Dr. Lewis accolades from the Pennsylvania State Senate and a Joint Award from various religious Christian and Jewish communities, the Catholic Diocese of Pennsylvania, and the American Red Cross.
A pioneer in medical technology, Dr. Lewis co-developed the Amplonic Sound Selector, the first computerized hearing aid. This innovation became a cornerstone of a $9 billion industry despite initial skepticism from peers when presented in Las Vegas. Dr. Lewis’ extensive research also included groundbreaking work with various lasers used in medical procedures.
