Dr. Klugh, a dedicated health care professional, has been serving as an associate professor and division chief of pediatric neurosurgery at the University of Nebraska Medical Center since 2020. As such, he oversees the pediatric neurosurgery residency training program and provides level-one trauma care and advanced neurosurgical services to children throughout Nebraska. Additionally, Dr. Klugh engages in community outreach and education to improve access to pediatric neurosurgical care.

Before joining the University of Nebraska, Dr. Klugh was a pediatric neurosurgeon for the U.S. Navy for over a decade, beginning in 2008. During the same time frame, he also served as the chief of pediatric neurosurgery at the Naval Medical Center San Diego. Earlier, Dr. Klugh garnered experience as a pediatric neurosurgery fellow and clinical instructor at Stanford University’s school of medicine and Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford from 2007 to 2008.

Dr. Klugh served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1988 to 1990, serving to the rank of lance corporal. He subsequently entered college, receiving a Bachelor of Science in chemistry from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1994 and a Doctor of Medicine from Baylor University in 1998. Additional educational pursuits to his credit included an internship and residency in neurosurgery at the National Naval Medical Center/Walter Reed, a residency in neurosurgery and trauma critical care at the University of New Mexico, and a residency in neurosurgery and fellowship in pediatric neurosurgery at Stanford University. Dr. Klugh is board-certified in neurosurgery.

Adding to his professional success, Dr. Klugh is a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the Congress of Neurological Surgeons and the Neurosurgical Society of America. These affiliations have been instrumental in shaping his career and helping him remain at the forefront of his field. Civically invested, Dr. Klugh has been engaged with organizations like 100 Black Men of Omaha and Habitat for Humanity International, and through various science, technology, engineering, and mathematics education initiatives.

As a seasoned researcher and scholar, Dr. Klugh has contributed to various peer-reviewed publications, such as the Journal of the American Medical Association-Otolaryngology with his article, ‘Radiology Case Quiz: Pediatric Neck Mass (Deep Cervical Lipoblastoma).’

Dr. Klugh’s most notable achievement throughout his career was developing a comprehensive pediatric neurosurgery program at the Naval Medical Center in San Diego. This program was tailored to the needs of military families and their children and included implementing advanced surgical techniques and technologies to enhance patient outcomes and care quality. Dr. Klugh also established a collaborative training environment for residents and fellows, fostering the next generation of pediatric neurosurgeons.

Dr. Klugh’s success can be attributed to various mentors, the support of his family, his faith and the many positive experiences he gained with the U.S. military. Looking ahead, he envisions a future where everyone has access to care, regardless of where they reside. He also intends to continue supporting the community throughout Nebraska as a dedicated physician. Since the completion of a $55 million expansion at the children’s hospital, Dr. Klugh remains committed to matching the investment by developing an advanced pediatric program that will provide children access to cutting-edge care with services ranging from laser therapy to advanced imaging technologies.
