Beginning his career in the U.S. Army in 1997 as a flight surgeon and clinic officer-in-charge with the Combat Applications Group, Dr. Edgar provided comprehensive medical care to soldiers, civilians and family members within the unit. Over the next few decades, he worked as a command surgeon for the 82nd Airborne Division, director of the Department of Combat Medical Training, and commander of the 264th Medical Battalion, the 28th Combat Support Hospital, and the 18th MEDCOM.
In more recent years, Dr. Edgar garnered success as a command surgeon for the U.S. Central Command from 2011 to 2014. He was also a commander for the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases between 2013 and 2015, where he managed an operating budget of over $135 million and over 800 military, civilian and contract personnel. Moreover, Dr. Edgar excelled as a staff physician at the Barquist Army Health Clinic at Fort Detrick from 2015 to 2017 and as the medical director for the Department of Soldier Medicine at Fort Hood between 2017 and 2022.
Beyond his clinical expertise, Dr. Edgar had the opportunity to influence future medical leaders as an adjunct faculty at Monroe Troop and Family Medical Clinic at Fort Hood from 2000 to 2001.
Highly educated, Dr. Edgar received a Bachelor of Science in chemistry from the U.S. Military Academy in 1988, a Doctor of Medicine from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in 1992, a Bachelor of Science in tactical and operational aspects of war from the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College in 2000, and a Master of Science in strategic studies and military national resource strategy and policy from the U.S. Army War College in 2009.
As part of his continued success throughout his medical career, Dr. Edgar has been active in several leading industry-related organizations, including as a member and elected fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians since 2015. He has also served on the Committee on Tactical Combat Casualty Care and as a lead consultant at Master Networks, a relationship-based networking business. Furthermore, Dr. Edgar has been affiliated with the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps and is a respected guitarist and vocalist with the Detrick Protestant Chapel Praise Band at Fort Detrick.
As a leading authority in his field, Dr. Edgar became a published author with the release of a 2013 article in the Journal of Special Operations Medicine. The article was titled ‘A Triple Option Analgesia Plan for Tactical Combat Casualty Care: TCCC Guidelines Change.’
Dr. Edgar was recognized as a Top Texas Doctor in 2024, showcasing his expertise as a leading physician. However, he recalls his most notable achievement while commanding a hospital in Iraq during the busiest part of the war. Over 15 months, he led an organization of 725 individuals. Dr. Edgar’s hospital became the most casualty-laden combat support hospital ever deployed, treating 6,000 trauma patients, performing over 15,000 surgeries and transfusing nearly 20,000 units of blood.
Dr. Edgar attributes much of his success in the military and medicine to several substantial mentors. His future goals include adding value to those who appreciate leadership, growing his client base and enjoying the flexibility of working for himself in a consulting capacity.
