Haviva Malina, MD, owner of Keta Medical Center, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in health care.
Dr. Malina, a respected board-certified emergency medicine physician of over 15 years, co-founded Keta Medical Center, a premier mental health practice specializing in ketamine treatment therapy. This venture was co-founded with her sister-in-law, Dr. Cheryl Malina, who is also a board-certified emergency medicine physician. The duo provides various types of treatment for conditions like depression, bipolar disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Currently operating four locations, including two in Manhattan, New York, one in Oradell, New Jersey, and one in New Rochelle, New York, they are preparing to open a fifth soon in Brooklyn, New York.
Dr. Malina and her business partner chose to pivot away from emergency medicine after developing a passion for this new approach to mental health treatment. Dr. Malina was particularly fascinated after witnessing the dramatic effects on patients suffering from treatment-resistant depression, anxiety, PTSD and other mood disorders. Meanwhile, Dr. Cheryl Malina noticed near-immediate results in acute psychiatric cases during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Their groundbreaking approach to helping patients find relief encompasses ketamine IV therapy and Spravato nasal therapy treatments, which can last months at a time. Additionally, patients have access to ketamine-assisted psychotherapy, which combines the effects of ketamine treatments with psychotherapy.
Dr. Malina prides herself on working hard to increase accessibility to this treatment style to a wider range of patients. Her commitment to this includes an in-depth consultation with each potential patient to ensure that it’s a good potential treatment plan, and working directly with insurance providers to determine the best possible assistance for each patient.
Before transitioning into entrepreneurship, Dr. Malina was an emergency medicine attending physician at Hoboken University Medical Center in Hoboken, New Jersey, from 2013 to 2022. She served in the same capacity at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx, New York, between 2009 and 2013.
A graduate of Barnard College in New York City, Dr. Malina received a Bachelor of Arts in psychology, summa cum laude, in 2001. Subsequently, she earned a Doctor of Medicine from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx in 2005. She completed an emergency room residency at Jacobi Medical Center between 2006 and 2009, received a medical license in New York and New Jersey, and became board-certified through the American Board of Emergency Medicine.
Active in her professional community, Dr. Malina is a member of the American Board of Emergency Medicine. Her success in the ketamine treatment sector has garnered her recognition in Forbes.com and MGM. Aiming to make ketamine therapy more accessible to society at large, Dr. Malina’s goals also include expanding her centers while educating psychologists on the significant impact such treatment can have on patients’ ability to function.
Dr. Malina believes that ketamine can be an effective way to help treat patients because it creates new neural pathways in the brain, which can help individuals shift their thinking and behavior. This process also allows for new opportunities for neuroplasticity, providing hope for individuals of all ages.
Attributing much of her success to her curiosity, Dr. Malina notes that it is essential to view patients as whole individuals rather than just treating physical symptoms. Oftentimes, they are unable to express their medical conditions, causing them to go untreated. Dr. Malina also believes that mental health transcends race, religion and socioeconomic status, and she intends to continue advocating for access to treatment for all.
