Attilio Orazi, MD, FRCPath, professor and chair of pathology of the Paul L. Foster School of Medicine at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in education and health care.

With four and a half decades of experience, Dr. Orazi has built a distinguished career in education and health care. He currently excels as professor and chair of the department of pathology at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, a role he has held since 2018. His experience also includes directing the hematopathology fellowship program at Cornell University and serving as a professor at Columbia University and Indiana University School of Medicine. Earlier in his career, he worked as a staff pathologist in Milan from 1984 to 1992 and as a clinical hematologist in the UK from 1979 to 1983. He has made significant contributions to his field as the author of multiple books, over 360 published works, and 285 peer-reviewed medical journal articles, along with numerous book chapters. He has also served as editor for several forthcoming books, with one expected to be released in early 2025, while actively pursuing other writing projects and contributing to various academic papers. He also dedicates his time to serving on the promotion and tenure committee at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso, as a fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists, an executive committee member of the Society for Hematopathology, and as chairperson of the European Bone Marrow Working Group.

In light of his impressive undertakings, Dr. Orazi’s has earned numerous honors, including recognition as one of Texas’s Top Doctors since 2019, America’s Top Doctors for Cancer, America’s Best Doctors, and New York Super Doctors. He has also been acknowledged as a top scientist in the world and received the resident award from Thomas Jefferson University. Laying a solid educational foundation for these accomplishments, he earned a Doctor of Medicine from the Università degli Studi di Milano in 1979, followed by a specialty diploma in anatomic pathology from the University of Pavia in 1987 and a specialty diploma in clinical hematology from the University of Milan in 1991. He is also certified in anatomic pathology and hematology by the American Board of Pathology and is a fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists.

Reflecting on his path, Dr. Orazi’s passion for medicine began in high school, driven by his curiosity about diseases, their effects on people, and their scientific groundings. He started his career as a clinical hematologist in the UK before transitioning to pathology with a focus on hematopathology. In the 1990s, he delved into bone marrow pathology, a relatively niche field at the time, and his pioneering work led to significant advancements and recognition as an expert in the area. His early expertise resulted in numerous publications, establishing him as a key figure in the field. He takes great pride in his contributions to disease classification and his collaboration with the World Health Organization and other leading platforms. His work has advanced the understanding of hematologic diseases, particularly in refining disease classification systems and integrating these insights into diagnostic algorithms and treatment protocols.

Dr. Orazi attributes his success to the guidance of the right mentor, diligent time management, and unwavering perseverance. Looking to the future, he remains dedicated to advancing his current projects and completing ongoing initiatives, including being actively engaged in multicentric studies with various institutions. Additionally, he is committed to publishing more research in professional journals and is currently working another book. In advising aspiring professionals, he emphasizes the importance of pursuing one’s passions with perseverance, particularly in a resource-rich environment like the United States where success is achievable.
