Dr. Lennie Kyomuhangi Bazira, director of policy at the Community Health Impact Coalition, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in public health.
Persevering through numerous challenges, Dr. Bazira has built an esteemed professional life in public health across more than 30 years. Born in Uganda, she started her professional journey as a medical officer at Mbuya Military Hospital in her home country in 1992. After 10 years in that position, Dr. Bazira took on such roles as chief of party for Catholic Relief Services’ AIDSRelief, associate country director and technical adviser of regional performance-based funding for the University of Maryland, deputy manager for Abt Global’s Partnership for Transforming Health Systems 2, and chief program officer, country director and interim chief executive officer for Amref Health Africa. After immigrating to the United States in 2016, she served as a senior project officer at Jhpiego Corporation and a senior program manager at Medical Care Development International. As the lead of health employment at the Mastercard Foundation, Dr. Bazira designed a program to support health workers in middle-income countries. In 2023, she accepted the position of director of policy for the Community Health Impact Coalition, where she plays a key role in developing and implementing guidelines, policies and funding for community health workers around the world.
Dr. Bazira’s performance in the field has been backed up by her academic journey. She obtained a Bachelor of Medicine in dental surgery from Makerere University in 1991. In 2001, Dr. Bazira completed a postgraduate diploma in human resources management and development from the Uganda Management Institute. Subsequently, she earned a Master of Public Health in health economics from the University of Cape Town in 2004. Dr. Bazira’s education has been aided by a number of certifications, including in health systems management from the Galilee International Management Institute, in executive leadership from Cornell University, in governance and health from the John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, and in project management from Jhpiego Corporation. She has attended courses on contract management for the United States Agency for International Development twice: with Humentum in 2015 and with Development Essentials LLC in 2018.
In addition to her career, Dr. Bazira is a loving mother to twins and raised her niece and nephew as well. She finds joy in spending time with her children, attending church and mentoring young adults, especially young women. Looking ahead, Dr. Bazira hopes to continue working with high-profile nonprofit organizations in the public health field. She remains dedicated to improving health on a global level. Dr. Bazira is especially passionate about the health of women and children and fighting against infant and maternal mortality rates. She also aims to promote gender equality and support for working mothers.
