Ingemar Davidson, MD, PhD, founder at Kidney Academy, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in health care.

With nearly five and a half decades of experience to his credit, Dr. Davidson has established a successful career in health care, specializing in organ transplantation and dialysis vascular access in end-stage renal disease patients. His experience includes serving as co-director of Controversies in Dialysis Access from 2003 to 2022, adjunct professor of Surgery at Tulane University, and professor of surgery at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, from which he retired in 2017. He also held the position of professor of surgery at Parkland Memorial Hospital. Motivated by his passion for research, he made the decision to establish the Kidney Academy.

Dr. Davidson has contributed to the field through several written works, including “Dialysis Access Seal Syndrome, Diagnosis, Prevention and Treatment Strategies,” which he presented at the Kuala Lumpur Vascular Access Conference in 2024. Other notable works include “Safety in Dialysis Access – The Aviation Metaphor,” “Changing the Peritoneal Dialysis Access Algorithm with a Precise Technique of Percutaneous Seldinger PD Catheter Placement,” and he has served as a speaker at the Charing Cross Dialysis Access Masterclass and Workshop from 2016 to 2018 and in 2020. He authored “Review of the Current Status of Percutaneous Endovascular Arteriovenous Fistula Creation for Hemodialysis Access,” published in CardioVascular and Interventional Radiology in 2019, and has spoken at the Vascular Access Society of Europe from 2009 to 2011, 2013 to 2016, and in 2019. He was also a speaker at the Vascular Access Society of the Americas Practicum. He co-authored and co-edited “Peritoneal Dialysis: Surgical Technique and Medical Management,” part of “The Davidson Medical Series Book 1” in 2012, and authored several articles in the Journal of Vascular Access in 2012, 2010, and 2007. 

Dr. Davidson has also contributed to “Access for Dialysis: Surgical and Radiologic Procedures,” Second Edition, in the Landes Bioscience Medical Handbook (Vademecum) in 2002, co-authored “Kidney and Pancreas Transplantation,” Second Edition, in 1999, and “Handbook of Kidney and Pancreas Transplantation” in 1998. He co-authored “On Call In…Vascular Access: Surgical and Radiologic Procedures” in 1996. Additionally, he is a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Vascular Access and has served as a reviewer for various medical journals. He has contributed to numerous books, articles, peer-reviewed publications, and proceedings, and has spoken at congresses and symposiums worldwide. Dr. Davidson also serves as an editor for Dialysis Access, The Journal of Vascular Access, in Milan, Italy.

Dr. Davidson holds several memberships, including fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the American Medical Association, the American Society of Diagnostic and Interventional Nephrology, and the American Society of Transplant Surgeons. He is a founding member of Dialysis Access Synergy, a member of The Transplantation Society, served as past president of the Texas Transplantation Society Inc., and is a member of the Vascular Access Society of the Americas. He is also the founder of the Kidney Academy and a former board member of the Organ Bank, Southwest Transplant Alliance. Laying a solid educational foundation, he earned a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, in 1970, completed a research fellowship in surgery at Tulane University from 1973 to 1974, a residency at Sahlgrenska University Hospital, and a PhD from the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, in 1980.

In the coming years, Dr. Davidson hopes to continue to be professionally active for as long as possible. When advising aspiring professionals, he emphasizes the importance of being honest with oneself. He is currently working on an article about an algorithm designed to address the specific needs of dialysis patients, particularly those with kidney issues. Additionally, if he could give advice to his 18-year-old self, he would say to prioritize honesty and the importance of integrity.
