Tyler Wood, PharmD, BCBBS, system director for pharmacy oncology and biosimilars at Providence, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in health care.

With over a decade and a half of experience to his credit, Dr. Wood has established a successful career in health care, specializing in health system pharmacy and drug strategy, oncology pharmacy, biologics and biosimilars, and the 505(b)(2) new drug application pathway and approvals. He currently excels as system director of pharmacy oncology and biosimilars at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center, a national, faith-based, nonprofit health system with over 50 hospitals across seven states. His responsibilities include drug formulary management, drug utilization management, and drug strategy. He has developed innovative metrics to track financial value and novel contract structures to establish mutually beneficial partnerships with drug manufacturers and vendor partners. He also led a years-long project to create an industry-leading tool that successfully ties revenue back to individual drug expenses, revolutionizing reporting methodology and strategic decision-making. Additionally, he maintains a patient-first mentality and has incorporated patient responsibility amounts into his strategies and tools.

Dr. Wood’s experience also includes serving as system pharmacy clinical services program director for Oncology at Providence from 2022 to 2023, manager of pharmacy operations at Joe Arrington Cancer Center and Treatment Center, Providence in 2022, supervisor of pharmacy clinical services at Covenant Health from 2020 to 2022, clinical oncology pharmacist at Covenant Health from 2015 to 2020, and clinical pharmacist at Covenant Health from 2011 to 2015. Additionally, he has been a clinical assistant professor at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Pharmacy since 2020. Additionally, he is a member of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists and Phi Lambda Sigma and serves on the board of directors for the Graves Foundation and the Remember Our Heroes Foundation. In light of his impressive undertakings, he has been honored with the Culture 99 Award and the Values in Action Award from Covenant Health.

Reflecting on his path, Dr. Wood laid a solid educational foundation, starting as a pharmacy intern at Covenant Health from 2008 to 2011 and earning a Doctor of Pharmacy from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Pharmacy in 2011. He is also a Board Certified Biologics and Biosimilar Specialist. 

Dr. Wood attributes his success to building strong relationships, believing that cultivating meaningful connections is essential both professionally and personally. While the phrase “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know” can sometimes seem negative, he emphasizes its truth. He highlights how combining expertise with effective networking and solid relationships has been crucial to achievements. Reflecting on his experiences, he notes that positive relationships with patients and colleagues have facilitated valuable recommendations and support, even extending to personal matters like seeking advice for a family member’s health concerns. 

In the coming years, Dr. Wood is committed to personal and professional growth. He aims to be a supportive husband, advancing his wife’s career while nurturing their family and maintaining solid connections with extended family. Professionally, he will focus on opportunities for improvement and optimization, especially in the post-COVID era, where financial recovery and cost-saving measures are critical.
