Michelle L. Costa, DNP, MS, RN, chief clinical officer at National Health Care Associates Inc., has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in leadership development.

With over two and a half decades of experience, Dr. Costa has built a successful career in leadership development. She currently excels as the chief clinical officer at National Health Care Associates, a role she has held since 2022. In this position, she oversees nursing, clinical reimbursement, case management, dietitians, and regulatory compliance, as well as clinical programming, managing employee engagement, retention, and recruitment, and handling reimbursement. Her prior experience includes serving as a senior clinical officer at Genesis in 2022, senior vice president of clinical operations at Genesis from 2018 to 2022, vice president of clinical operations from 2010 to 2018, director of clinical operations from 2003 to 2010, manager of clinical operations from 1999 to 2003, and director of nursing from 1998 to 1999. Reflecting on her journey, Dr. Costa laid a solid educational foundation by earning a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in registered nursing from Salve Regina University in 1986, a master’s degree in health care administration and management from the same institution in 1999, and a Doctor of Nursing Practice from Chamberlain University in 2022. She also holds certifications in Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers from the American Red Cross and is a Lean Six Sigma Green Belt certified by the American Society of Quality. She takes great pride in earning her doctorate and finds professional fulfillment in developing programs for fall and psychotropic medication reduction and forming collaborative partnerships.

Dr. Costa attributes her success to her unwavering commitment as a patient advocate, always striving to do more for the patient and continuously seeking improvement. She believes in approaching her work with humility and does not consider herself above others. As a strong advocate for change, she encourages her team to “do things effectively and efficiently,” consistently questioning why things are done a certain way and how they can be improved. In the coming years, she aims to work with the Advisory Board at Arizona College of Nursing as the sole representative of the long-term care industry, with the goal of elevating long-term care nursing as a desirable profession for registered nurses. Before retiring, she hopes to collaborate on publishing work related to long-term care, such as a research project. She plans to continue her work as long as she maintains her, with a focus on helping registered nurses recognize the value of caring for patients in long-term care.
