Jack R. Luderer, MD, executive in residence at Michigan State University, Spartan Innovations, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in health care.
With nearly five decades of experience to his credit, Dr. Luderer has dedicated himself to the field of health care and entrepreneurship, specializing in working with the Food and Drug Administration, fundraising, medical devices, and therapeutic drug and device development. He currently excels as an executive in residence at Spartan Innovations with Michigan State University. Spartan Innovations, part of Michigan State University, focuses on launching sustainable startups from university technologies and providing resources, funding, and mentorship to foster entrepreneurial growth. The organization supports faculty, students, and alums in transforming innovative ideas into successful businesses, contributing to economic development and technological advancement.
Additionally, Dr. Luderer serves as the founder and executive director of the Biosciences Research and Commercialization Center (BRCC) at Western Michigan University, which he established in 2003. The BRCC is an initiative focused on advancing bioscience research and fostering the commercialization of new technologies. The center provides funding, resources, and support to researchers and entrepreneurs to help bring innovative bioscience products and solutions to market. It aims to bridge the gap between research and industry, promoting economic growth and technological innovation in the biosciences sector. Additionally, he has been a clinical consultant and writer for pharmaceutical startups and big pharma through the Apjohn Group, LLC, and North Coast Pharmaceutical Innovations LLC since 2010.
In addition to his current roles, Dr. Luderer has served as associate dean of research at Western Michigan University’s Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine from 2011 to 2012 and as interim dean from 2010 to 2011. At Pharmacia Corporation, Pfizer Inc., he was the vice president of medical affairs for North America from 1996 to 2001. He held the same title at Pharmacia & Upjohn from 1996 to 2000, where he was also vice president of clinical pharmacology and development from 1988 to 1994. Prior to these accomplishments, he pursued an education at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine, earning a Doctor of Medicine in 1974.
Reflecting on his career, Dr. Luderer takes pride in having conducted some of the earliest studies on converting enzyme inhibitors, a class of drugs widely used for hypertension and heart failure treatment, as well as being instrumental in helping with FDA approval. He also notes one of his greatest achievements has been being the associate and founding dean of research at Western Michigan University’s Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine. He attributes his success to his parents, who instilled in him from a young age the value of education and hard work.
In the coming years, Dr. Luderer is dedicated and passionate about continuing his work as long as possible. He enjoys discovering new products, collaborating with people, and finding innovative solutions. He recently attended the World Vaccine Conference and is currently working with a small company to develop a new vaccine technology. In advising future professionals interested in the field, he says that it is exceedingly important to understand the problem before trying to solve it. He also emphasizes being humble, surrounding yourself with good people who will help you grow, and realizing you need a team to get the work done.
