Gebreselassie Nida, physician at Cone Health, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in endocrinology, internal medicine, and lifestyle medicine.

As one of nine children for his parents in rural Ethiopia, Dr. Nida spent his childhood helping his subsistence-farming family raising cattle and sheep in an area still without electricity, running water, roads, or cars. Although his family faced many challenges, his father valued education and sent him to a local elementary school that was nearly an hour away on foot. He excelled as a student and attended middle school and high school even further hours away from his village with similar challenges. His high school was 5 hours one-way walking and running. He credits his teachers, his friends whom he shared rooms with, and many other kind strangers helping him survive the challenges away from home since age 12 in pursuit of education. Despite these humbling life challenges, he successfully graduated from high school with great distinction to allow him to receive a coveted 7-year full ride public scholarship to attend Addis Ababa University, from which he earned an MD degree in 1999.

After graduation, Dr. Nida combined his clinical expertise with an academic appointment as a clinician and lecturer in Pathology at the then Debub University in Ethiopia from 1999 to 2001. He later immigrated to the United States in 2001 along with his wife, Ethiopia Desta. He continued his academic efforts at Wayne State University and Detroit Medical Center in Detroit Michigan, completing an internship and residency in internal medicine; a fellowship in endocrinology, diabetes, and metabolism between 2004 and 2009. After completion of his post-graduate studies, he found success as a distinguished clinician in endocrinology first at CaroMont Health of Gastonia, North Carolina and later at Tesfaye Fanta, MD, PLLC from 2009 to 2014.
