Dr. Ulm has had an illustrious career in genetics and molecular biology, spanning multiple roles and educational achievements. He embarked on his educational journey in 1992, graduating as valedictorian and a National Merit Scholar from T.C. Williams High School. Continuing his academic pursuits, he earned a Bachelor of Science in chemistry from Duke University, graduating summa cum laude in 1996. He then pursued further education, completing a Doctor of Medicine in general medicine, genetics, and molecular biology from Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2006. Simultaneously, he earned a PhD in genetics and molecular biology with a focus on gene therapy from Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Ulm’s career trajectory began in 1993 as a Howard Hughes Institute-funded student medical researcher at the National Cancer Institute. Over the years, he held various research and academic roles, including positions as a student medical researcher at Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center and a medical and graduate student researcher at Harvard Medical School, MIT, and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. He also worked as a translator of scientific papers and documents at the Natural Standard Corporation from 2001 to 2003.

In 2006, Dr. Ulm embarked on his clinical journey as an intercampus pediatrics resident physician at UCLA, Cedars-Sinai, and Olive View Hospitals in the Greater Los Angeles Area. He further honed his skills through overseas medical fellowships in Taiwan and Germany. Continuing his academic pursuits, he became a postdoctoral fellow in medical genetics and bioinformatics at Cedars-Sinai and UCLA from 2013 to 2016. Dr. Ulm also served as a clinical genetics resident at UPMC in Pittsburgh from 2019 to the present, alongside his current role as a bioinformatic scientific resource analyst and biomedical data specialist at the NCBI since 2020.

Fluent in multiple languages, Dr. Ulm has also worked as a translator and interpreter alongside his career in bioinformatics and medical research. He attributes his success to his interdisciplinary approach and family support. Looking forward, he aims to advance his expertise in modeling human diseases using programmatic-informatics methods. He also plans to engage in creative pursuits, including writing novels, short stories, and music to inspire others.
