Dr. Indira Narayanan, adjunct professor at Georgetown University Medical Center and independent consultant for global maternal and newborn health and nutrition, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in newborn health.

With over 50 years of experience to her credit, Dr. Narayanan has excelled as an adjunct professor at Georgetown University Medical Center and a global maternal and newborn health and nutrition consultant since 2015. Prior to this, she worked in various companies as a nutrition consultant, including Georgetown University, since 2009. In addition, she has served as a visiting professor in several different countries.

Dr. Narayanan began her career as a lecturer in pediatrics at the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Postgraduate Education and Research at the University of Chennai in Pondicherry, India, from 1972 to 1974. She garnered a stellar reputation as head of the neonatal unit and associate professor of the pediatrics and post-partum unit in the department of obstetrics and gynecology at Lady Hardinge Medical College of Delhi University from 1974 to 1986. She was active as chairman of pediatrics and neonatology at Moolchand Hospital from 1986 to 1999 before transitioning to the role of senior technical advisor in newborn health at USAID/Path/Basics from 1999 to 2009.

Before embarking on her professional path, Dr. Narayanan pursued an education at Delhi University, where she earned a Medical Doctorate in pediatrics, neonatology, and social pediatrics in 1974. She was selected for and completed fellowships at the National Academy of Medical Science, the Indian Academy of Pediatrics, and the National Neonatology Forum. She holds a certification as a group 1 biomedical research investigator and key personnel from the CITI Program.

Beyond her responsibilities within the field, Dr. Narayanan has participated in numerous endeavors outside of her professional circles. She contributed to the Rotary Club’s efforts in her community and is in the process of writing a grant for a proposed international project. She found success with three works she co-authored, which were published in Lancet and Global Health: Science and Practice. In addition to her primary vocation, Dr. Narayanan is a member of the National Academy of Medical Sciences and the American Academy of Pediatrics. She also volunteered as a mentor with Helping Babies Breathe.

In light of her impressive undertakings, Dr. Narayanan has accrued several accolades throughout her career. She was presented with five medals and 15 prizes for academic excellence, three gold medals from the Indian Academy of Pediatrics, and the Healthy Children Achievement Award. She was awarded for academic excellence and service by the Indian Academy of Pediatrics and the National Academy of Medical Sciences.
