Hailing from over four decades of dedication and expertise in his chosen vocation, Dr. Winchester has found success as the director of neonatology at the Riley Hospital for Children at Indiana University Health, a pediatric acute care children’s hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana, since 2001. Likewise active as a clinical professor at the Indiana University School of Medicine, Dr. Winchester has distinguished himself through his creative approach to clinical situations, which enshrines obtaining a comprehensive understanding of the patient’s history and preventing future occurrences of illness.
Prior to his current endeavors, Dr. Winchester served in a similar role at Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs between 1981 and 1990. He also held a faculty role at the University of Colorado, during which time he taught clinical pediatric coursework from 1985 to 1986.
Though he initially held an interest in history, Dr. Winchester studied experimental psychology at Stanford University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts, cum laude, in 1970. Following this accomplishment, he attained a Master of Arts at the University of Michigan in 1972, and a Doctor of Medicine at the University of Colorado in 1976. Dr. Winchester subsequently undertook an internship, residency, and fellowship at the University of Colorado Medical Center. He has also been inducted as a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics.
During the course of his life, Dr. Winchester benefited richly from the tutelage of several mentors, including his parents, who encouraged him to pursue his dreams, and his early teachers, who fostered his talents and exerted a significant impact on his career trajectory. In subsequent years, he learned a great deal from James A Lemons, MD, the chair of the neonatal department at the Indiana University School of Medicine. Throughout the course of his professional journey, he is proud to have earned distinction as the first neonatologist to practice anywhere in Colorado outside of Denver, and to have made the first discovery of an environmental contaminant causing neonatal jaundice. Dr. Winchester’s most gratifying accomplishment of all, however, has been his four children and the success they’ve enjoyed in life.
