Specializing in general medicine and nephrology, he has played a pivotal role in educating both medical professionals and patients in South Carolina about hypertension and kidney diseases, underscoring his dedication to raising awareness and promoting better health care practices in these critical areas. In this capacity, Dr. Kraikit regularly reviews and assesses complaints against various doctors to ascertain their merit, after which he renders a recommendation to the board regarding dismissal or the initiation of appropriate actions.
Hailing from over five decades of experience in his chosen field, Dr. Kraikit initially came of age in Thailand, where he saw many of his countrymen fall ill and grow progressively worse from a lack of access to proper health care. This inspired him to pursue his studies in medicine at the Chiang Mai University Faculty of Medicine, from which he earned an MD in 1967. Following this accomplishment, he immigrated to the United States and undertook a residency in internal medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina, where he found the motivation to specialize in nephrology. He was subsequently offered a fellowship in the subject by the University of Colorado, after which he went on to serve as the medical director of the Acute Dialysis Unit and Medical Intensive Care Unit at McLeod Regional Medical Center.
Across the span of his subsequent career, Dr. Kraikit has attributed his success to the skills he accrued throughout the course of his education, underscoring its central role in enhancing job prospects for young professionals and ultimately elevating the well-being of both their families and the communities they serve. In thanks for his invaluable assistance in establishing a nursing school, as well as his generous initiative in creating a scholarship program for students, Dr. Kraikit was honored by Francis Marion University for his contributions – notably, he is also the namesake of the university’s Sompong Kraikit Simulation Laboratory at the Luther F. Carter Center for Health Sciences.
