With 50 years of experience to his credit, he has excelled throughout his medical career and served his community’s medical needs in a variety of locations and positions which included Professor of Medicine, section of nephrology, University of llinois at Chicago, Senior Physician and Director of the dialysis unit at Cook County Hospital (now John Stroger Hospital), Medical Director of Fresenius Congress Parkway Dialysis Center, all in Chicago, Senior Physician and Consulting Nephrologist at Rush Oak Park Hospital, and Attending Nephrologist at Oak Park Dialysis Center, in Oak Park, and River Forest Kidney Center, all three in Illinois. He is Fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP) and Fellow of the American Society of Nephrology (FASN).
Before embarking on his professional path, Dr. Bakir pursued an education at Baghdad College of the Boston Jesuits, completed his medical internship at the Medical City Hospital in Baghdad, worked in England in Casualty Medicine and special care neonatal units, passed his ECFMG exam and came to Chicago, where he pursued his career as described above.
Dr. Bakir has authored numerous highly cited publications and was invited to several hospitals in the US and abroad to discuss his work and experience in lupus nephritis. He also gave many CME lectures to hospital staff physicians and nurses. Apart from medicine, Dr Bakir has also written an interesting and highly informative 540-page book, “From Baghdad to Chicago: Memoir and Reflections of an Iraqi American Physician,” with readers’ comments on Amazon and a review on Google.
In light of his impressive undertakings, Dr. Bakir has accrued several accolades throughout his career. He was presented with the Life Achievement Award from the Iraqi Medical Sciences Association (IMSA-USA), received two awards from the Cook County Graduate School of Medicine, several awards from hospitals in the Chicagoland area, and was recognized among the Leading Physicians of the World.
