F. Curtis Bryan, II, MD, Chief of the Department of Surgery at Bayfront Health St. Petersburg, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in surgery and cardiovascular medicine.
With decades of experience to his credit, Dr. Bryan has excelled with the West Florida Division of Bayfront Health St. Petersburg as the chief of the department of surgery since 2023 and the medical director of cardiovascular services since 2022. Prior to these roles, he served with the AdventHealth Medical Group in the department of cardiovascular surgery as the medical director of clinical support and cardiovascular care from 2021 to 2022 and an attending staff surgeon from 2019 to 2022. Moreover, he was active with the West Florida Division of HCA as the medical director for the structural heart valve program from 2015 to 2019 and the medical director for cardiovascular services from 2013 to 2019. During this time, Dr. Bryan was further recruited as an attending staff surgeon in cardiothoracic surgery for Cardiac Surgical Associates LLP between 2011 and 2019.
Likewise, Dr. Bryan was appointed as the section chief of cardiovascular surgery and the vice chief of surgery at Northside Hospital in St. Petersburg, Florida from 2014 to 2019 and 2014 to 2016, respectively. He previously held various positions with the Grand Strand Regional Medical Center between 2005 and 2011, including the vice chief of surgery, the chief of surgery, secretary-treasurer of the medical staff, attending staff surgeon in cardiothoracic surgery for Coastal Cardiovascular Surgery LLC, the vice chief of staff and the chief of staff. Beforehand, he had briefly served with Crosby, Walley, Morgan & Duncan, M.D., P.A. at the Forsyth Medical Center as an attending staff surgeon in cardiothoracic surgery between 1997 and 1999. Dr. Bryan began his career as part of the U.S. Air Force Reserve Officers Training Corps between 1980 and 1982.
To support his professional ambitions, Dr. Bryan initially completed coursework in aerospace science at Tennessee State University as well as coursework in neurobiology at Harvard University in 1982. He continued his academic efforts with a bachelor’s degree, summa cum laude, at the Vanderbilt University School of Arts and Sciences in 1984. He eventually concluded his formal studies at the Emory University School of Medicine, from which he graduated with a Doctor of Medicine in 1988. Following these accomplishments, Dr. Bryan pursued a general surgery residency and a cardiothoracic surgery residency at the Emory University School of Medicine and was distinguished as a Scholar in Surgical Leadership at Harvard Medical School in 2019.
Attributing his wealth of success to his passion for his craft, Dr. Bryan has accrued several impressive accolades throughout his career. The recipient of the Heart to Heart Award, he was been notably recognized among America’s Top Doctors, a Top Doctor in Florida, America’s Top Physicians in Cardiothoracic Surgery by the Consumer Research Council of America between 2005 and 2006, a Top Doctor in Thoracic and Cardiac Surgery with Castle Connolly between 2018 and 2023, America’s Most Honored Doctors between 2022 and 2023 and the Top Doctors by Tampa Magazine in 2023. Among the many highlights of his career, he is incredibly proud of his tenure at Northside Hospital, where he was able to obtain a three-star ranking from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons in both cardiac surgery and aortic valve and coronary bypass surgery, a combined procedure. In 2008, he participated in the World Championship in Triathlon in Hawaii. Looking toward the future, Dr. Bryan hopes to advance to an administrative role while transitioning to a hybrid between clinical and administrative responsibilities.
