Location: Dana Point, California, United States

Marc Vanefsky, MD, the regional chief of neurosurgery emeritus at the Southern California Permanente Medical Group, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in the field of medicine.

Having accrued more than three decades of experience in his chosen field, Dr. Vanefsky distinguished himself in his role as the regional chief of neurosurgery at the Southern California Permanente Medical Group from 1996 until 2020, whereupon he was granted emeritus status. Bearing a particular specialty in cerebrovascular neurosurgery, he was responsible for providing oversight for personnel at five different neurosurgical hospitals within the Kaiser Permanente health system, encompassing five million patients and 28 highly talented neurosurgeons.

Over the course of his career, Dr. Vanefsky developed a genuine passion for the healthcare profession, and often sought to forge a special bond with his patients throughout the span of their care. Likewise, he worked diligently to pass on his professional knowledge to those serving under his supervision and frequently served as a mentor to burgeoning medical residents. Among the lessons he learned during his own career journey, Dr. Vanefsky always sought to impart his personnel with an enthusiasm for service on behalf of their patients, to prepare themselves for any eventuality, and to dedicate themselves to a lifetime of learning in a field that is ever-changing.

Having long known he would enter the field of medicine, Dr. Vanefsky studied neuroscience at the University of Rochester, from which he earned a Bachelor of Science in 1985. Following this accomplishment, he graduated from the Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science with a Doctor of Medicine in 1989. After concluding his residency in neurosurgery at Stanford University, during which time he benefited richly from the tutelage of his program chairmen, Dr. Vanefsky formally embarked upon his career path.

In accounting for his success, Dr. Vanefsky largely credits his lifelong commitment to learning, as well as the fact that he benefited from the encouragement and support of an incredibly talented team throughout his career. Looking toward the future, he aspires to continue serving in various board positions throughout the field, and to continue working to advance the discipline of neurosurgery as a whole.
