Kara S. Garner, DNP, APRN, PPCNP-BC, RN-BC, director of nursing services at Grand Canyon University, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in nursing and pediatrics.

As defended in her dissertation on nurse retention, in the coming years Dr. Garner wants to help close the gap in the worldwide nursing shortage alongside maintaining her executive role. Holding a Doctor of Nursing Practice in organizational leadership from the University of Utah, a Master of Science in Nursing from California State University, Long Beach, and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Phoenix, her professional prowess has garnered her industry and educational awards from the American Thrombosis and Hemostasis Network, the Orange County School Nurses Organization, the Los Angeles Chapter of the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners, and other relevant organizations.

Dr. Garner attributes her success to her grit, determination, intelligence, and refusal to give up—the same qualities she encourages in others who seek to enter the medical field. She recounts one of her most notable career achievements when her paper was chosen out of five in the world by the World Federation of Hemophilia. As a result, she was nominated to receive the Presidential Award from St. Luke’s Health System, where she was director of the hemophilia department for nine years before joining Grand Canyon University in 2021.

Dr. Garner is an advanced practice registered nurse who has further distinguished herself through qualifications earned as a board-certified hemostasis nurse by the American Nurses Credentialing Center, a pediatric primary care nurse practitioner as well as a public health nurse by the California Board of Registered Nursing, and a pediatric primary care nurse practitioner by the Florida State Board of Nursing. She believes that her passion for her profession, helping others, and learning to have patience have been the most significant contributing factors to her achievements throughout her career.

With love for people as her driving force, Dr. Garner says she feels the most rewarded seeing her patients recover, grow, and excel in their lives, especially after enduring the pandemic. Even with her wealth of experience, she is always striving to become a better nurse and ultimately wants to be remembered for helping people to get better. The mother of eleven children—seven daughters and four sons—Dr. Garner enjoys quilting as a hobby.
