Born in Cuba, Dr. Giron immigrated to the United States as a child as part of Operación Pedro Pan, the largest exodus of children in history. After spending time in a refugee camp, he was eventually reunited with his parents. Driven by personal experiences and inspired by a mentor, Dr. Giron decided to pursue a career in medicine. He earned a Bachelor of Science in physics from Yale University in 1970 and went on to graduate from Harvard Medical School with a Doctor of Medicine in 1975.
One of the most notable highlights of Dr. Giron’s career was his involvement in the discovery of HIV/AIDS. While working at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, he treated one of the very first cases of HIV and became deeply involved in its treatment and research. He published original papers on HIV and collaborated with the Gallo Lab in the development of the first HIV antibody testing system. Dr. Giron also published the first description of the co-infection of Lyme Disease and Babesia.
Dr. Giron’s commitment to patient care and research is evident in his extensive involvement in clinical research and his position as a clinical associate professor at Florida State University College of Medicine. He has dedicated his career to helping others through medicine and has found personal fulfillment in making a positive impact on people’s lives. Additionally, Dr. Giron is an active member of the Operation Pedro Pan Group, Inc., a testament to his continued support for his fellow immigrants and their families.
Outside of his professional pursuits, Dr. Giron enjoys reading, vacationing on cruises, spending quality time with his family, and traveling. He attributes his success to his passion for his work and emphasizes the importance of enjoying and doing one’s best in their chosen profession. In the future, Dr. Giron aims to continue his contributions to the field of infectious diseases, further advancing patient care and research.
