James H. Philip, MD, Anesthesiologist and Director of Anesthesia Bioengineering at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in biomedical engineering.

Dr. Philip is a senior consultant anesthesiologist and anesthesia liaison to the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Brigham & Women’s Hospital and Director of Bioengineering at the hospital, a position he has held since 1980. Board-certified as an anesthesiologist and medical examiner, Dr. Philip holds seven patents for more than 20 medical products in production, and has focused his career on applying science, technology, and engineering principles to teaching and clinical care in pain medicine and anesthesiology. He holds a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering and a Master of Electrical Engineering from Cornell University, and was awarded his Doctor of Medicine degree in 1973 by SUNY Upstate Medical University. Dr. Philip completed an internship at New England Deaconess Hospital, a two-year clinical fellowship in anesthesia at Harvard Medical School, and a residency in anesthesia at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital before beginning his clinical career.

In addition to his clinical and engineering work, Dr. Philip is a professor of anesthesia at Harvard Medical School and an associate professor of anesthesia at the Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology faculty, where he has been a member of faculty since 1979. His research has been extensively published and he has been a member of the editorial boards of the Journal of Clinical Anesthesia and the International Journal of Clinical Monitoring and Computing, among others. Dr. Philip has consulted for numerous medical institutions, policy boards, and private companies, and is the president of Med Man Simulations, Inc. In recognition of his research and teaching contributions to the field, he has been presented with awards including the Society for Technology in Anesthesia JS Gravenstein Award and named a 2008 Career Teaching Award Finalist by the International Anesthesia Research Society.
