He founded the original branch in Corpus Christi, and he continues to serve the organization as the chief medical officer and emergency room medicine physician. Adjacent to his primary endeavors, Dr. Schwirtlich is also a physician and co-owner of Ally Emergency Medical Centers.
Throughout his career, Dr. Schwirtlich has specialized in emergency medicine and administration. Prior to founding the Physicians Premier, he served as the medical director of the Brownsville Medical Center from 1980 to 1982. Additionally, he was the emergency room director for Valley Baptist Health System from 1982 to 1992. As part of his dedication to his profession, Dr. Schwirtlich remains affiliated with several industry-related organizations, including the Texas Association of Freestanding Emergency Centers, the National Association of Freestanding Emergency Centers, and the American College of Emergency Physicians.
Before embarking on his vocational journey, Dr. Schwirtlich pursued a formal education, beginning with his time at The University of Texas, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry in 1976. He subsequently continued his studies at the Baylor College of Medicine, achieving a Doctor of Medicine in 1979. In addition to his academic credentials, he completed his residency program at Ben Taub Hospital, and he is board certified in emergency medicine. Well regarded for his accomplishments in the field, Dr. Schwirtlich was previously honored as the Educator of the Year in 1996 and the Doctor of the Year in 1982 by his colleagues.
Dr. Schwirtlich is particularly grateful to have begun his career in 1972 by working with his former pediatrician, which proved to be a perfect introduction to the field of medicine. Furthermore, he is notably proud to have excelled in the freestanding emergency center industry, which has allowed him to increase access to emergency medical services in smaller communities. In the coming years, Dr. Schwirtlich intends to continue expanding his organization and offering its services to other communities, and he hopes to see the Emergency Medicine Improvement Act passed in Congress.
