With many years of experience to his credit, Dr. Gorum has excelled as the founder of the ISACSS Education Foundation since 2022. In this position, he guides the aforementioned nonprofit organization in increasing the number of high school students entering the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Moreover, he has found success as an orthopedic surgeon operating out of an eponymous private practice, W. Joseph Gorum MD PC, in New York since 2012. As a testament to his exceptional achievements throughout his career, Dr. Gorum was recognized among the Top Doctors in Orthopedics Surgery in 2022 and the 100 Most Important innovators in 2012.
Before embarking on his professional path, Dr. Gorum pursued an education at Howard University, from which he earned a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering. He subsequently concluded his formal studies at the Drexel University College of Medicine in 1997, graduating with a Doctor of Medicine. Following these accomplishments, Dr. Gorum completed an internship in orthopedic surgery and a residency in orthopedic surgery at the Drexel University College of Medicine and Hahnemann University Hospital between 1997 and 2002.
Beyond his primary responsibilities within the field, Dr. Gorum has participated in numerous endeavors outside of his professional circles. As a volunteer, he has contributed to the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. as well as the Philadel[hia STEM Ecosystem. Moreover, he had been previously active as a postdoctoral research fellow under Doctor Keita Lorenson, an experience he cites as the highlight of his career. Dr. Gorum has been additionally affiliated with various organizations in relation to his areas of expertise, including the New York Medical Society, the King County Medical Society and the Wilmington chapter of 100 Black Men, of which he was a founding member.
Encouraged by his parents to always help others throughout his formative years, Dr. Gorum initially found his way to medicine in a non-traditional manner, having initially desired to aid those in need through mathematics and science. He ultimately decided upon orthopedics as he particularly enjoys helping otherwise healthy patients with injuries in need of fixing, especially as he witnesses their recovery following the surgery. He is incredibly proud of having received the Principal Investigator Award from National Geographic for his research on surgical treatments to evaluate ligament regeneration. Looking toward the future, Dr. Gorum hopes to continue making a difference in the lives of others and eventually return to academia to obtain a Master of Business Administration degree.
