With more than four decades of experience to his credit, Dr. Messina has excelled as a now-retired psychologist and clinical mental health counselor as well as a webmaster for Coping.us since 1999. In 2021, he had been additionally active as a counselor with Cotler Health Care Psychology Services in Wellington, Florida. He formerly served at Troy University as an assistant professor and full-time lecturer between 2010 and 2021. Licensed to practice psychology and mental health counseling in the state of Florida, Dr. Messina previously worked with patients at regional nursing homes.
Before embarking on his professional path, Dr. Messina pursued an education at the University at Buffalo, from which he initially earned a master’s degree. He eventually graduated from the aforementioned university in 1974 with a Doctor of philosophy in counseling psychology. Following these accomplishments, Dr. Messina concluded his studies at the University of Florida, completing postdoctoral studies in community mental health through the National Institute of Mental Health.
Beyond his primary responsibilities within the field, Dr. Messina has participated in numerous endeavors outside of his professional circles. The co-founder of Becos, a nonprofit organization that focused on helping the homeless, he has further contributed to the Mayo Clinic as a volunteer. He has also been affiliated with a number of organizations in relation to his areas of expertise, including as a lifetime member of both the American Psychological Association and the American Counseling Association. Moreover, he found success as the co-founder and second president for the American Mental Health Counselors Association. Dr. Messina has likewise thrived with his written works since 1992, having co-authored for “Growing Down: Tools for Healing the Inner Child,” “Tools for Handling Control Issues,” “Tools for Anger Work-Out,” “Tools for Personal Growth,” “Laying the Foundation: The Roots of Low Self-Esteem” and “The Self-Esteem Seekers Anonymous: The Sea’s Program Manual.”
In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Messina has accrued several accolades throughout his impressive career. In 2017, he was recognized as the Florida Mental Counselor of the Year. Furthermore, he was honored as the Volunteer of the Year by the Salvation Army. Attributing his success to his transparency, openness and honesty with his clients, he is incredibly proud of supporting and promoting the American Mental Health Counselors Association in addition to his steadfast dedication to advocating for interracial nondiscriminatory behavior to all people. Looking toward the future, Dr. Messina hopes to continue his efforts as a volunteer with the Mayo Clinic, of which he was a patient himself within their stellar cardiac rehabilitation program.
