Mary J. Giuffra, PhD, Psychotherapist and Owner of Mary J. Giuffra, PhD, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in psychotherapy.

With nearly 55 years of experience to her credit, Dr. Giuffra has excelled as a psychotherapist operating out of her eponymous private practice since 1972 as well as both a dean and council member with the New York University Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development since 2004. In addition to her primary work in psychotherapy, she has been active as a staff family therapist and supervisor with the Center for Family Learning from 1978 to 1990, a clinical supervisor and instructor for Cornell New York Hospital from 1984 to 1988, and a tenured professor and the founding director of the nursing program, bachelor’s nursing program and master’s nursing program at the College of Mount Saint Vincent from 1974 to 1988. A former dean at the College of Mount Saint Vincent, she began her career as a tenured associate professor in the master’s and doctoral program at New York University from 1968 to 1975. Attributing her success to her curiosity, Dr. Giuffra’s exceptional professional endeavors have been celebrated with a Distinguished Alumni Award from the New York University Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development, a Distinguished Alumni Award from the New York University Rory Meyers College of Nursing, and an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from the College of Mount Saint Vincent.

Before embarking upon his professional path, Dr. Giuffra became registered as a nurse at the Saint Mary’s School of Nursing in 1956. She subsequently obtained a Bachelor of Science at St. John’s University, a Master of Arts from New York University, a Master of Science from New York University and a Doctor of Philosophy in research and theory development in nursing from New York University Rory Meyers College of Nursing. Harboring a lifelong passion for helping others, she was further inspired by her mother, who was a nurse, as well as a renewed fascination about family dynamics, family trauma and various psychotherapies. Among the many highlights of her career, she is incredibly proud of developing the nursing programs at the College of Mount Saint Vincent, which was developed with a different vision of health-oriented treatment as opposed to disease-oriented treatment as to better encourage patients to utilize the strengths of their health. The esteemed author of “2 x 2 on the Ark,” Dr. Giuffra hopes to travel more, continue enjoying life and publish her second book, “Two Career Family: Create Space and Shape Time to Work, Love and Play,” in the coming years.
