T. Bruce Ferguson, Chief Medical Officer at Perfusio Corp., has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in medical innovation.
After initially obtaining bachelor’s degrees in music and art in 1975 from Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts, Dr. Ferguson continued his education with a Medical Doctor in 1979 from Washington University in St. Louis and completed a residency in general and cardiothoracic training with the Duke University School of Medicine in Durham, North Carolina in 1988.
From 2006 to 2017, Dr. Ferguson prospered as an Adult Cardiothoracic Surgeon and professor with the Department of Cardiovascular Sciences with the East Carolina Heart Institute at East Carolina University (ECU) in Greenville, North Carolina. He then served as adjunct professor in the department of engineering at the College of Engineering and Technology, ECU from 2017 to 2019. Since 2019 he has excelled as a chief visiting research scientist with the departments of engineering, physics and surgery with ECU.
In 2014, Dr. Ferguson co-founded the premier medical imaging firm Perfusio, in which in his current role as chief medical officer he oversees the administrative and execution of several clinical studies using company technology at several institutions around the country, serves as the principal investigator on all of the firm’s NIH-funded grant activities, composes grants and works with the National Institutes of Health to get them executed, collaborates with all those who are working in the company and consults with collaborators on the research and development side.
Dr. Ferguson was inspired to enter his profession because of his father, who was an internationally known cardiothoracic surgeon. At first, he did not want to follow in his father’s footsteps but when he was already in medical school, he found out that the allure of cardiovascular physiology was too much to turn down. Because of an injury, he had to give up surgery, but that set him on a path in which he helped a marvelous new form of medical imaging.
In the coming years, Dr. Ferguson plans for Perfusio to continue to evolve into a knowledge company. Having started out as a medical device company, it has already transitioned into being a knowledge company that delivers in immediate real time, unique information to surgeons and providers at point of care to make more accurate, more beneficial decision making. He and his colleagues have made excellent progress in in doing that, and so in the next few years, the goal is to move well beyond the surgical realm where the firm started.
