Dr. Smith has excelled with Readinghealth Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Medicine in Pennsylvania since 2008, during which time he has been appointed as the medical director since 2018. Additionally, he has been active as an assistant professor of surgery in the Tower Health Division of the Drexel University School of Medicine since 2022. Having previously retired from his private plastic surgery practice in 2004, he previously corrected abnormalities of the body that may be causing adverse health effects and performs surgeries to correct malformations caused by birth defects, trauma, tumors or disease. Certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery in 1978, Dr. Smith also performed elective surgeries, which patients undergo to improve the aesthetic appearance of a certain body part.
Dr. Smith formerly served as a staff member with the Reading Hospital and Medical Center as a surgical assistant in the operating room in 1967, the chairman of the section of plastic surgery from 1994 to 2000 and a staff member from 1976 to 2004. He has been additionally active as the assistant chief resident and chief resident at the graduate Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania between 1972 and 1973, an instructor in general surgery at the Geisinger Medical Center from 1973 to 1974, a member of the courtesy staff at the Community General Hospital in Reading from 1976 to 1997 and a plastic surgery resident at the Milton Hershey Medical Center of the Pennsylvania State University from 1974 to 1976. A diplomat of the National Board of Medical Examiners, Dr. Smith has been affiliated with the Keystone chapter of the American College of Surgeons, American Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons, Undersea Hyperbaric Medical Society, Berks County Medical Society, Lipoplasty Society of North America, Pennsylvania Medical Society, Northeastern Society of Plastic Surgeons and American Association of Hand Surgery, among others.
Dr. Smith was a recipient of the 50 Year of Service Award by the Berks County Medical Society in 2016. He was likewise selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, Who’s Who in the World, Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare and Who’s Who in America. Accepting a research fellowship from the American Cancer Society in 1974, he was also celebrated with the Award of Excellence for Continuing Medical Education from the Pennsylvania Medical Society. In addition, Dr. Smith is a 2021 recipient of the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award, an inductee of the Who’s Who Top Professionals of the Year and a Featured Member in Marquis Millennium Magazine.
Dr. Smith was inspired to pursue medicine because of their family doctor and his biology teacher. Earning a Bachelor of Science from Ursinus College in 1962 and a Doctor of Medicine at Temple Medical School in 1966, he later served to the rank of captain with the U.S. Air Force between 1967 and 1969. Since 2023, he has been a member of his local chapter of The American Legion. Among his career highlights, Dr. Smith fondly recalls passing his plastic surgery boards and becoming a fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
