He was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Honor Societies. After a rotating internship at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, Dr. Kaplan returned to the University of Pennsylvania for a residency and chief residency in surgery under the leadership of Dr. Jonathan Rhoads. He then received fellowship training in endocrine research at the Mayo Clinic with Dr. Claude Arnaud, where he worked on early studies of a calcitonin immunoassay and on the purification of parathyroid hormone. In 1968, he joined Dr. Gerald Peskin, one of his former professors at UPenn, at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago and became Assistant Professor of Surgery at the University of Chicago. In 1971, he moved to the University of Chicago Medical Center. He was awarded Professor of Surgery with tenure in 1975.

He has served as Governor of the American College of Surgeons and Head of its Medical Motion Picture Committee, President the Metropolitan Chicago Chapter of the American College of Surgeons, President of the Chicago Surgical Society, Chief of Staff of the University of Chicago Medical Center and a member of the Board of Directors of the International Association of Endocrine Surgeons. An accomplished author, Dr. Kaplan has published more than 200 scholarly papers and is the editor of three books, almost entirely devoted to topics related to endocrine surgery. He has been a Visiting Professor at many institutions in the United States and around the world. Many of his former fellows hold prestigious positions at important institutions worldwide. He has been selected nine times as a “Favorite Teacher” by students of the Pritzker School of Medicine and in 2011, received the “Excellence in Teaching” award by the Chief Residents in the Department of Surgery at the University of Chicago. He ranked among the nation’s “Best Doctors” many times during his career. He withdrew from clinical practice in 2002, but still enjoys teaching, research and writing.

Dr. Kaplan’s greatest joys, however, are his wife, Sara, and his children and grandchildren, Dr. Abe, Sharone, Traci, Joe, Ariel and Aidan.
