Specializing in cardiac pathology, Dr. Bharati is considered one of the world’s leading authorities in the pathology of congenital heart disease and the conduction system of the heart. From 1988 to 2019, she served as the director of the Congenital Heart and Conduction System Center at the Heart Institute for Children’s Christ Hospital Medical Center. Prior to that position, Dr. Bharati was chair of the pathology department at the Deborah Heart and Lung Center, Browns Mills, NJ, from 1982 to 1988, and associate director of the Congenital Heart Disease Research and Training Center at the Hektoen Institute of Medicine in Chicago, IL, from 1976 to 1982.

An expert in the field, Dr. Bharati is currently a consultant in cardiac pathology at the Advocate Children’s Hospital, professor of pathology at Rush University Medical Center, and teaches cardiac pathology at Rush-Presbyterian—St. Luke’s Medical Center in Chicago as well as other universities in metropolitan Chicago. Notably, Dr. Bharati has authored or co-authored more than 420 publications in peer-reviewed, scientific journals, as well as three original books through the Futura Publishing Company: “The Pathology of Congenital Heart Disease: A Personal Experience with More Than 6,300 Congenitally Malformed Hearts” in 1996, “Cardiac Surgery and the Conduction System” in 1983, with a second revised edition in 1992, and “The Cardiac Conduction System in Unexplained Sudden Death” in 1990. She had the opportunity to work on research with Dr. Maurice Lev, who was the leading expert in pathology of congenital heart disease and the conduction system of the heart more than 25 years ago.

Having attended the University of Madras to study medicine and surgery, Dr. Bharati received an MD in 1966 with an A+ in medicine and surgery. She moved to the United States that same year and holds medical licensure in Ohio and Illinois. Dr. Bharati is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology (ACC), the American Heart Association and the Heart Rhythm Society (HRS). She has served on continuing medical education committees such as the ACC, HRS and Chicago Medical Society for many years. She was the third woman president of the Chicago Medical Society (2007-2008). She has won numerous awards for her pathology of congenital heart disease exhibits. The Citizenship Council of Metropolitan Chicago awarded her as the Outstanding New Citizen when she received her citizenship in 1977. Dr. Bharati was also named among 100 Women Making A Difference in Today’s Chicago Woman magazine (July 1999, Chicago, IL). She received the Women in Science Award in 2004 at the 88th annual meeting of the American Medical Women’s Association. As a testament to her success, she was featured in the 47th edition of Who’s Who in America and the 17th and 18th editions of Who’s Who of American Women.
