Mike Guertin, MD, MBA, CPE, FASA, professor of anesthesiology and chief perioperative medical director at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in health care and administration.

With nearly four decades of experience in health care, education, and administration, Dr. Guertin excels in various roles, including chief perioperative medical director at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center since 2021, where he helps to run and manage the operating rooms. Additionally, he is revamping the preoperative process with the COMPASS system, Comprehensive Perianesthesia Systems and Solutions, to streamline patient preparation for surgery, which features enhanced communication, an outpatient assessment center, and an enhanced surgical recovery program. He has also been a professor of anesthesiology at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center since 2019 and director of the Faculty Leadership Institute at The Ohio State University College of Medicine since 2019. At The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, he was medical director of ambulatory surgical services from 2013 to 2022 and associate professor of anesthesiology from 2013 to 2019. He was a member of the board of directors and medical director from 2009 to 2013 and a partner at Premier Anesthesiologists from 1998 to 2013, both with The Ohio Surgery Center. Furthermore, he served as an assistant professor of anesthesiology at The Ohio State University Medical Center from 1992 to 1998.

Laying a foundation for his future, Dr. Guertin pursued a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry, graduating magna cum laude from Wayne State University in 1984, followed by a Doctor of Medicine from Wayne State University School of Medicine in 1988. He then completed a residency in anesthesiology at The Ohio State University College of Medicine from 1988 to 1992. He then earned a Master of Business Administration from The Ohio State University Fisher College of Business in 2015. In addition to his primary vocation, he remains actively involved in various organizations. He has been a fourth-degree member of Council 11445, Knights of Columbus, since 2004. He is also the founder of Day Away, a non-profit organization that provides memorable experiences for individuals with serious illnesses. His memberships include the American Association of Physician Leaders, the Society of Ambulatory Anesthesia, the American Society of Anesthesiologists, Beta Gamma Sigma, and Phi Beta Kappa.

In light of his impressive undertakings, Dr. Guertin was recognized as the Ohio State University Fisher College of Business Weidler Scholar in 2015 and inducted into the Beta Gamma Sigma National Business Honor Society in 2012. Additionally, he was honored with the Department of Anesthesiology Teacher-of-the-Year award at The Ohio State University Medical Center in 1995. In the coming years, he aims to continue his passion for ongoing learning and guiding others, with the goal of nurturing the next generation of health care leaders and supporting organizations in developing their own leaders.
