Alan C. Hartford, MD, PhD, FACR, FASTRO, Professor of Medicine at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in medical education.

With more than 30 years of experience to his credit, Mr. Hartford has excelled as a professor of medicine at the Dartmouth Geisel School of Medicine since 2021 and the program director for the radiation oncology residency at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center since 2016. He previously served as an associate professor of medicine at the Dartmouth Geisel School of Medicine from 2010 to 2021, the interim chief for the section of radiation oncology at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center from 2006 to 2016 and an assistant professor of medicine at the aforementioned medical school from 2004 to 2010. Prior to these positions, he completed a residency in radiation oncology and a fellowship in radiation oncology at Massachusetts General Hospital between 1993 and 1999. Mr. Hartford began his career as an intern at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts from 1992 to 1993.

Before embarking on his professional path, Mr. Hartford pursued an education at Stanford University, from which he earned a Bachelor of Science in biological sciences, with distinction, and a Master of Arts in philosophy in 1983. He continued his academic efforts with a Doctor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School in 1992. He concluded his formal studies at Harvard University in 1997, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy in political economy and government. In addition to these accomplishments, Mr. Hartford has been licensed to practice medicine in Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont, and has been certified on multiple occasions by the American Board of Radiology.

Beyond his primary responsibilities, Mr. Hartford has participated in numerous endeavors outside of his immediate professional circles. A cast and band member with Up With People between 1983 and 1984, he has also financially contributed to a number of organizations including Christian ministries, academic institutions and charities in his region. He is likewise affiliated with the American Society for Radiation Oncology, the American College of Radiology, the American Medical Association and the Radiological Society of North America. Mr. Hartford found success with his written works as well, having authored myriad articles for scientific and medical journals in addition to his fictional book, “First Days of August,” which was published under the name Alan Fröning for Archway Publishing in 2015.

Attributing his success to the grace of God as well as the love of his parents and the care of his peers, Mr. Hartford has accrued several accolades throughout his impressive career. Notably, he was recognized as the Top Doctor of the Year by the International Association of Top Professionals in 2020, a Top Doctor in New Hampshire by New Hampshire Magazine in 2012, 2014 and from 2017 to 2020, one of America’s Top Cancer Doctors by Newsweek in 2015 and one of America’s Top Doctors by Castle Connolly between 2012 and 2020. A fellow of the American College of Radiology, he was further presented with an Excellence in Teaching Award from the Dartmouth Geisel School of Medicine in 2014 and 2019. Believing there is no greater joy than nurturing the development, growth and healing of others, Dr. Hartford is most proud of his dedication to his wonderful daughter, Anya.
