Scott T. With nearly 45 years of experience to his credit, Dr. Weiss has excelled as the associate director of the Channing Division of Network Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital since 2012, a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School since 1996, a professor of environmental health at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health since 1996 and a physician in the department of medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital since 1995. Additionally active as a consultant, he previously worked at Brigham and Women’s Hospital as the director of the Center for Personalized Medicine from 2009 to 2021, the associate director of the Channing Laboratory from 2005 to 2012, the director of respiratory, environmental, and genetic epidemiology at Channing Laboratory from 1996 to 2012, the director for the Center for Genomic Medicine from 2007 to 2010, the chairman of the Committee on Clinical Investigation from 2005 to 2007 and an associate physician in the department of medicine from 1983 to 1995. Dr. Weiss has likewise served at the Partners HealthCare Center for Personalized Genetic Medicine, formerly known as the Harvard Partners Center for Genetics and Genomics, as the interim director from 2008 to 2009, the program director for respiratory disease genetics from 2004 to 2009 and an associate director from 2000 to 2004.

Dr. Weiss found further success as a consulting physician at the Veterans Administration Outpatient Facility in Boston from 1980 to 2001 and a consultant in pulmonary disease at the New England Sinai Hospital from 1978 to 1987. Moreover, he held a number of positions at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center between 1978 and 2010, including as a physician, an attending physician in the medical service, an associate physician, the associate chief of the pulmonary unit, the director of the pulmonary clinic and pulmonary medical intensive care unit, an assistant physician and the chief of the pulmonary unit. Dr. Weiss began his career as an instructor in medicine at Harvard Medical School from 1977 to 1980 before advancing to become an assistant professor of medicine from 1980 to 1985 and an associate professor of medicine from 1985 to 1996.

Before embarking on his professional path, Dr. Weiss pursued an education at Haverford College, from which he earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science, cum laude, in 1968. He subsequently continued his formal studies at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in 1972, graduating with a Doctor of Medicine. He concluded his academic efforts with a Master of Science in epidemiology at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in 1977. In addition to these accomplishments, Dr. Weiss refined his skills through internships, fellowships and residencies at Boston City Hospital, Harvard Medical School and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center between 1972 and 1978.

Beyond his primary responsibilities, Dr. Weiss has participated in numerous endeavors outside of his professional circles. Between 1986 to 2004, he contributed to the State University of Groningen in the Netherlands as a visiting professor in the department of epidemiology and social medicine. He was also recruited to the research review committee for the Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Foundation from 1998 to 1999. Appointed to the editorial boards for myriad medical journals, he has notably authored published reviews, journal articles and scientific papers as well as co-authoring and editing four books within his areas of expertise. Proud to have been acknowledged as the second most cited pulmonologist in the world, Dr. Weiss has accrued several accolades throughout his impressive career, including Merit Awards from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute between 2007 and 2018, the Recognition Award for Scientific Accomplishments from the American Thoracic Society in 2008, the Albert S. Maschke Award for Excellence in the Art and Practice of Medicine in 1972, the Distinguished Scientist Award from the American Thoracic Society and the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine.
