Robert M. Shuman, MD, FAAN, President and Chief Executive Officer of Child Neurology Inc., has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in neurology.

In preparation for his career in neurology, Dr. Shuman pursued his higher education at numerous esteemed institutions. Starting at the Cornell University College of Arts and Sciences, he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in experimental psychology in 1963. He continued his studies at the Stanford University School of Medicine, earning a Doctor of Medicine in 1968, before transitioning to the University of Colorado School of Medicine to complete a residency in pediatrics.

Dr. Shuman completed an additional residency in anatomic pathology and a fellowship in neuropathology at the University of Washington School of Medicine, before completing yet another residency program in neurology at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine in 1985. Alongside his formal higher education, he is board-certified in neuropathology and neuroimaging, and holds a specialty certification in pediatric neurology. Dr. Shuman has co-authored textbooks in both neuropathology and pediatric cranial ultrasound.

Throughout his career, Dr. Shuman boasts numerous accomplishments and awards in recognition of his contributions to his field. He is proud of his discovery of pHisoHex’s toxicity in premature infants, his documentation of perinatal strokes in pediatric epilepsy, his application of the ketogenic diet to treat epilepsy, and the use of vagal stimulation in the treatment of pediatric epilepsy. He has earned a Best Teacher Award from the University of Nebraska and a National Institutes of Health fellowship to study pediatric neuropathology with Buster Alvord at the University of Washington.

Dr. Shuman has found success since 1991 as the president and chief executive officer of Child Neurology Inc. Prior to this post, he was the chairman of neurology at the University of Oklahoma and served as the vice chairman of pathology and the chief of neuropathology at the University of Nebraska. To keep abreast of developments in his field, Dr. Shuman is a fellow of the American Academy of Neurology and remains affiliated with the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Association of Neuropathologists, and the College of American Pathologists. In his spare time, he enjoys fast cars, photography, and meeting with his discussion group.
