Prior to securing this position, he thrived as a senior cardiothoracic surgeon at United Health Services Heart & Vascular Institute from 2018 to 2019 and as chief of cardiothoracic surgery at State University of New York Downstate Medical Center from 2015 until 2019. He previously served the University of Texas Medical Branch as the director of the minimally invasive cardiac and thoracic surgery programs and as the co-director of the lung transplantation program from 2010 to 2015, in addition to the Mount Sinai Medical Center as a cardiothoracic surgeon and surgical director of the lung transplantation program from 2008 until 2010. He began his professional journey as an associate surgeon at Brigham and Women’s Hospital from 2007 to 2008.

Dr. Beckles was interested in pursuing medicine from a young age, relocating at the age of 17 to the United States from Trinidad in the Caribbean and earned a Bachelor of Science at Stony Brook University. He later obtained a master’s degree from the aforementioned institution in 1994. He subsequently achieved a Doctor of Medicine in 1997; completed his general surgery internship, residency and chief residency; and gained a Doctor of Philosophy in molecular biology in 2004, all from SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University. Determined to broaden his professional pursuits, Dr. Beckles successfully finished a residency in cardiothoracic surgery at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in 2007 and a fellowship in minimally invasive surgery from Harvard Medical School in 2008.

Passionate about creating a peaceful environment and cohesive atmosphere through his work, Dr. Beckles is especially proud of his directorship and leadership achievements, providing clinical excellence, education and innovation in the field of cardiovascular and thoracic surgery. His team recently elevated the quality of an open-heart surgery program, attaining its first three-star rating from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons for overall patient care and outcomes in coronary artery bypass grafting procedures.

For his many accomplishments, Dr. Beckles has been recognized with numerous awards, including a Silver Level Lung Transplant Award from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Health Resources and Services Administration, a Recognition Award from Mount Sinai Medical Center, a Teaching Award from Texas A&M University at Galveston, and a Golden Apple Teaching Award from the State University of New York Downstate Medical School. He has also been honored in the Consumers Research Council of America’s Guide as one of America’s Top Surgeons and in Houstonia Magazine as one of Houstonia’s Top Doctors.

Committed to having a powerful impact on his community, Dr. Beckles has served as chief medical officer of a non-profit association in New York that focuses on mission trips and community health fairs and as a volunteer has helped raise $200 million in philanthropy to assist meaningful outreach programs. Looking toward the future, he plans to continue providing clinical excellence, education and innovation in the fields of cardiothoracic surgery. Moreover, he intends to publish a book on his program for coronary artery bypass surgery to bring more focus to his profession.
