She has also been core faculty at HCA Florida Kendall Hospital in Miami, Florida since 2014 and since 2011, a trauma attending, acute care surgery, critical care and general surgery physician at Kendall. She is an associate professor and an assistant professor of surgery at the University of South Florida, teaching students there since 2011. She is also an attending trauma surgeon at the University of South Florida. 

Dr. Boneva began her education at the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics at the Bulgarian Academy of Science in Sofia, Bulgaria, earning her diploma with honors. She completed coursework at Technical University, also in Sofia and earned a medical degree after completing coursework in engineering in Moscow, Russia. She completed her general surgery residency at the University of Maryland in College Park from 2004 to 2006 and a clinical fellow general surgery residency program at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire from 2006 to 2009. She completed a fellowship in surgical critical care at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland from 2009 to 2010 and completed a fellowship in shock trauma from the University of Maryland from 2010 to 2011.

In college, Dr. Boneva was named to the dean’s list multiple times. She was also an elite athlete, winning a bronze medal in sports gymnastics at an overall Nationals competition while still a student in high school. She found her way into medicine by accident. As an engineering and mathematics student, she was selected for a special program in Moscow while studying for a technical degree. Then, a group came along looking for volunteers to go on a health mission trip. She ended up going and found that medicine and patient care was her passion. She switched paths to pursue an education in healthcare instead.

Dr. Boneva has a psychology of leadership certificate from Cornell University, a certification in advanced surgical skills for exposure in trauma from the American College of Surgeons and multiple certifications for advanced trauma. She has also taken mission trips to Kenya, Moldova, Costa Rica and Bulgaria. As a writer, she has contributed articles to a number of professional journals. In recognition for her professional successes, she has received numerous professional awards, including Pride awards and academic excellence awards.
