James Leonard, Chief Medical Officer at Northwest Health, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in health care management.

Following obtaining a bachelor’s degree in liberal arts and sciences with coursework in chemistry and biology from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Dr. Leonard continued his education with a medical doctorate from the Midwestern University Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2002. He is certified in emergency medicine by the AOA Board of Emergency Medicine and is licensed to practice medicine in the state of Illinois.

As chief medical officer with Northwest Health, a regional healthcare network composed of three hospitals and an extensive medical group since 2018, Dr. Leonard’s chief responsibilities include coordinating and executing medical staff bylaws which include prevention and privileging, rules and regulations on how physician operate and responsibilities within their own sections or specialty departments and guiding those departments to meet quality standards. 

In addition, Dr. Leonard plays a role in executing operational protocols, guidelines, and expectations of the medical staff, sits on the quality Improvement committee for three hospitals, guides physicians’ involvement in all the quality initiatives, applies five-star metrics and measures to make sure each department or section is doing what they need to do to assure they are progressing and improving on all of their quality metrics and achieve the highest five-star ratings and scores they can get, and is involved in providing feedback and guidance on services and strategies throughout the market.

Dr. Leonard’s professional memberships include the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) and the American Association for Physician Leadership. He has garnered awards for outstanding leadership and outstanding patient care. He attributes his success to being focused on what is important and to the people around him. Likewise, he has the ability to get others to come along and collaborate to get everything done. Previously, Dr. Leonard had excelled as a medical director with the emergency department at La Porte Hospital, helping to bring that department to function operationally and the top in the nation in terms of emergency medicine metrics. In what he considers his career highlight, after ascending to medical director with Northwest Health, Dr. Leonard pulled three different medical staffs from three separate hospitals together as a unified market and then moved forward with appropriate strategy and quality to provide medical services to those in North Indiana.

Dr. Leonard is content and excited to stay in the role he is in at present. What he is doing is touching and affecting patients and people in their community. In the coming years, he is also anticipating making his department grow to a broader scale.
