Kay Bauman, Medical Director at State of New Mexico Corrections Department, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in medical education.

After obtaining a Bachelor of Science in zoology from the University of Michigan College of Literature, Science and the Arts in Ann Arbor, and a Master of Science in microbiology from the University of Michigan Rackham Graduate School in 1965, Dr. Bauman followed with a Master of Public Health in 1967 from the Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine in New Orleans. She continued her education with a Medical Doctor from the University of Michigan Medical School in 1973 and then completed an internship with Maricopa County General Hospital in Phoenix from 1973 to 1974. Dr. Bauman later served a faculty development fellowship with the Department of Family and Community Medicine with the University of Arizona in Tucson from 1984 to 1985. 

Dr. Bauman provided exemplary care as clinical director of the Avondale Primary Care Center with the Maricopa County Health Department and Department of Corrections Facility from 1974 to 1978 in Phoenix, after which she made an impact caring for patients with Su Clinica Familiar, National Health Services Corps in Harlingen, Texas and the El Rio Santa Cruz Neighborhood Health Center and Traditional Indian Alliance Urban Health Clinic in Tucson from 1978 to 1980 and as a physician in private practice, with the Tucson Clinic from 1982 to 1983. Dr. Bauman later served as medical director with the State of New Mexico Corrections Department in Santa Fe from 2013 to 2014.

Dr. Bauman has made her mark in academia as clinical assistant and later associate professor from 1984 to 1992 with the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Arizona College of Medicine. She then flourished as an associate professor from 1992 to 1996, a professor from 1996 to 2010, as vice chair from 1995 to 1998, as interim co-chair from 1998 to 2000 and as associate dean of student affairs and education from 2000 to 2002 with the Department of Family Practice and Community Medicine with the John A. Burns School of Medicine University of Hawaii at Manoa. Dr. Bauman additionally found success as a professor from 2010 to 2014 in the Department of Family and Community Medicine with the University of New Mexico School of Medicine.

Dr. Bauman attributes her success to the English professor who opened her eyes into the possibility of becoming a doctor and showed her faith that she could actually make it in the field. Dr. Bauman’s most notable achievement is being most known nationally as one of the first AIDS doctors at the very beginning of the epidemic when she was at the University of Arizona College of Medicine. She was on many national committees for creating guidelines for AIDS care and professional education. At the University of Arizona Medical School she created and taught the very first course nationally on Caring for Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual People.

Though many of her immediate family are in medicine, Dr. Bauman currently primarily serves as a volunteer with refugee communities, a role she will continue. She is delighted to serve in both Albany, New York, where she was the cofounder of the Refugee Welcome Corporation, a nonprofit serving the refugee community’s housing and many other needs, and in two organizations in Tucson that serve this needful population.
