Specializing in obstetrics and gynecology and family medicine, a typical week finds Dr. Desir-Wilkinson charting reviews for nursing homes, devoting herself to inner-city work in South Jamaica, and three days in private practice focusing on preventive medicine, home care, and home visits for elderly patients.
Dr. Desir-Wilkinson attributes her success to her Haitian parents, who instilled in her the importance of good education and strong faith. She was inspired to pursue a career in medicine because she wanted a career with longevity and to help underserved people. When Dr. Desir completed her residency, she wanted to do inner-city work to help underserved communities. In 2008, she decided to open her private practice and hired a culturally diverse staff of women who are mostly mothers.
In the future, Dr. Desir-Wilkinson would like to do more mission work with her husband and hopefully adopt a child from another country. She intends to continue her private practice, home visits, and community service, as well as travel and international medicine.
