Cheryl Lee-Butler, Dentist, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in dental care.
After obtaining a Bachelor of Science in biology from Clark Atlanta University in 1979, Dr. Lee-Butler continued her education with a Doctor of Dental Surgery from the Howard University College of Dentistry in 1983. She thereupon opened her private dental practice in 1985, treating patients with severe mental and physical challenges. Dr. Lee-Butler was inspired to enter her profession by her father, who was also a dentist. What then made her choose to specialize on treating people with physical and mental challenges was her pediatric residency at Howard University, during which she did rotations at hospitals for sick children in Washington.
Among Dr. Lee-Butler’s honors are the Now Black Woman Award presented by The National Drifters, an organization dedicated to nurturing warm friendships and provide a social outlet for women with similar backgrounds and interests, the President’s Award presented by Edward Chappelle, the former president of the National Dental Association, the Alumni Achievement Award from Howard University College of Dentistry and recognition among America’s Top Dentists from Consumer’s Research Council of America.
In what she considers to be a career highlight, Dr. Lee-Butler is the current president of the National Dental Association, an organization promoting oral health equity among people of color by harnessing the collective power of its members, advocating for the needs of and mentoring dental students of color. Her memberships include the Robert T. Freeman Dental Society, the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and the American Association of Women Dentists. Attributing her success to hard work, compassion, and enthusiasm, in the coming years Dr. Lee-Butler is pondering retirement and a move to Ghana, West Africa.
