DeShawn L. Taylor, MD, Obstetrician-Gynecologist at Desert Star Family Planning, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in family planning.
After obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in biological sciences from the University of Southern California in 1997, Dr. Taylor obtained medical doctorates from the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles in 2001 and the Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science in Willowbrook, California the same year. She served a residency in obstetrics and gynecology with Drew University in 2005 and a fellowship in family planning with the Kerk School of Medicine of the University of Southern California in 2007, where she earned a Master of Science in clinical and biomedical Investigations the same year.
From 2007 to 2011 Dr. Taylor excelled as an assistant professor of clinical obstetrics and gynecology with the University of Southern California and with Planned Parenthood of Arizona, she provided superior care as medical director and vice president of medical affairs from 2009 to 2012. Dr. Taylor served a successful tenure as chair of the board of directors with NARAL Pro-Choice Arizona, supervising physician with Reno Fifth Health Center and board member of the Reproductive Health Technologies Project from 2013 to 2016. She founded Desert Star Family Planning, Phoenix in 2013, where she provides comprehensive family planning services and preventive health care.
Dr. Taylor’s professional memberships include the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists Committee on Health Care for Underserved Women and the board of directors Executive Committee, Abortion Care Network. She was the recipient of the Trailblazer Award, Maricopa County Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People in 2020.
Dr. Taylor is a highly mission-driven professional. She has a set of values that defines the decisions she makes about her life and business. The attributes come through in her interactions with individuals, particularly her patients, who feel seen, heard and well-cared for by her. The quality of her service clearly exudes integrity that makes her trustworthy to people other than her patients.
Among Dr. Taylor’s goals in the coming years is to grow the revenue from her business to the point that it reaches or exceeds the level of her previous earnings when she was an employee. Besides increasing the pay of the staff members at her facility, she also seeks to improve the general patient experience as it relates to clinic amenities and other conveniences. In addition, Dr. Taylor would like to create a seamless structure for all of her ventures, including her clinic responsibilities, non-profit work, as well as her national, state and local activities.
