After initially earning a Bachelor of Science in biology with a minor in chemistry from Florida International University in University Park in 2001, Dr. Fernandez continued his education with a medical doctorate from Universidad Iberoamericana in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic in 2005. He followed with a Master of Business Administration in health sector management and policy from the University of Miami School of Business Administration in Coral Gables in 2011. He served residencies in general surgery at the University of Miami School of Medicine, Jackson Memorial Hospital from 2007 to 2008 and in internal medicine with the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, JFK Medical Center from 2008 to 2011.
Since 2018, Dr. Fernandez has provided superior service as a chief medical officer with Armor Health, a physician-owned company that provides comprehensive medical, dental, and mental health services for incarcerated persons, with its main focus on forming partnerships with each client to provide quality health care services on a personalized basis. His professional memberships include the National Society of Hispanic MBAs, ASQ Healthcare Division, American Society, American Medical Association, American College of Physicians, Texas Medical Association, ACPM American College and the Bexar County Medical Society.
Dr. Fernandez attributes his success to his discipline to do the work that has to be done, as well as having a patient-focused team. In the coming years, he would like to see technology more leveraged than healthcare to make work for nurses and physicians more efficient.
