Arjun Bhattacharya, a Surgeon, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in trauma surgery.
Dr. Bhattacharya obtained his medical doctorate from Government Medical College and Hospital in Nagpur, India in 1961 and a Master of Science in surgery from GS Medical College and Hospital in Mumbai in 1967. He holds a diplomate from the American Board of Surgery and is board certified in cancer surgery, trauma and occupational medicine.
After providing superior service as a senior registrar with KEM Hospital in Mumbai from 1967 to 1971, Dr. Bhattacharya interned at the University Hawaii from 1971 to 1972 and served a residency with Deaconess Hospital, University of Missouri, St. Louis University from 1972 to 1975, later excelling as chief of surgery with BJH Occupational Medicine and president of the medical staff with Deaconess. He then served as a clinical assistant professor with St. Louis University beginning in 1985. In addition, he served the United States Navy as a director of surgery. Attaining the rank of captain, he served as a commander with the United States Naval Reserve from 1984 to 1992 and in Operation Desert Storm in Iraq from 1990 to 1991, earning honors for meritorious service.
Dr. Bhattacharya’s grandfather, who was a physician in India, played a substantial role in his career direction. He was also inspired by his father, who was an English professor at Harvard University. The inclination to have a career in medicine is truly in his blood, as many of his relatives are physicians. Dr. Bhattacharya has performed many trauma surgeries, but his most remarkable achievement involved performing successful surgery on a nine-months pregnant woman suffering from mitral valve stenosis. Both the mother and her baby survived and did very well. It was an unforgettable experience for him. In coming years, Dr. Bhattacharya would like to devote some of his his time to the Veterans Administration Hospital in his area.
