Amit J. Shanker, MD, Chair of Cardiovascular Medicine at St. Lawrence Health System, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in cardiovascular medicine.
Dr. Shanker is a US-based Interventional Cardiac Electrophysiologist and Global Health Technology Executive with significant MedTech experience in the Asia-Pacific/ANZ, MENA, Sub-saharan Africa, Europe, North America, and South America markets. Selected by Who’s Who in America (in 2021) as an international thought leader for his efforts in influencing and supporting artificial intelligence/machine learning, cardiovascular and SARS-CoV-2 initiatives across the globe, he has held clinical/health policy and commercial MedTech roles to help drive patient access to emerging therapeutics and help reduce healthcare inequities. This has included helping to build novel treatment and diagnostic paradigms implementing artificial intelligence, machine learning, and robotics. Dr. Shanker currently serves as Chief of the Cardiovascular Medicine Division for the St. Lawrence Health System. Dr. Shanker has extensive experience in providing medical/clinical diligence for new business development, upstream R&D, and M&A activities with medical therapeutic and artificial intelligence diagnostic firms. These efforts have culminated in numerous market creation/expansion initiatives and three acquisitions. He has advised venture capital, start up, and non-profit organizations based out of North America, Europe, Africa, and Asia-Pacific. Having served as Chief Medical Officer for Terumo (where he was based in New York/Tokyo) and Boston Scientific (where he was based in Singapore), Amit has significant experience in building and managing emerging markets and worldwide strategic medical affairs functions (clinical trial operations, professional education, health economics and market access, medical diligence for safety and quality) that coordinate speed-to-market strategies focused on rapid therapy adoption aligned with business objectives. He has also served as Chair of the Asia-Pacific Medical Technology Association (APACMed) Medical and Clinical Affairs Committee. He previously served as Associate Professor of Medicine at Columbia University School in New York, and as Medical Director of the Center for Advanced Arrhythmia Medicine holding leadership positions in US Physician/Facility Payment Policy and global health care policy with the American Medical Association (AMA), US Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), US Patient Centered Outcomes Research Initiative (PCORI), American College of Cardiology (ACC), and Heart Rhythm Society (HRS). Dr. Shanker maintains a clinical practice that has included 70,000 patient encounters/4,200 cardiac surgeries, 75 publications, and research grants from the American Heart Association and the National Institute of Health (NIH). He has participated in excess of 150 lectures across five continents. Dr Shanker received his post-graduate medical training at Brown University, the Mayo Clinic, Washington University School of Medicine, and the NIH. Dr. Shanker initially earned a Bachelor of Science in medicine from the Pennsylvania State University. He subsequently graduated with a Doctor of Medicine from Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University.
In conjunction with his primary responsibilities, Dr. Shanker has been recruited as an executive advisory board member for African Mission Healthcare and InGen Dynamics. He also advises on health policy issues for the American College of Cardiology, and Heart Rhythm Society. He additionally serves as an executive advisor for venture capital, start-up, and investment management firms based out of North American, Europe, Africa, and Asia-Pacific. For his professional excellence, he received Corporate Awards from Boston Scientific, the NIH National Research Service Award in 2003 (for his work in molecular cardiac gap junction proteins) and from the American Heart Association.
