Soon thereafter, Dr. MacConnell studied at the University of Alabama School of Dentistry’s department of oral and maxillofacial surgery, in which he completed a residency.
Establishing his private dental practice in West Point, Georgia in 1984, Dr. MacConnell specialized in anterior and posterior endodontics, cosmetic, implant and restorative general dentistry, oral surgery and fixed and removable prosthetics. He pioneered the use of state-of-the-art, fully-integrated, networked computer systems in the early 1990s. Building his practice from two patients with dental insurance to several thousand, Dr. MacConnell was the first dental practice in Georgia to file dental insurance electronically.
From 1998 to 2002, Dr. MacConnell served as a managed care dentist with Jerry E. Nutt Dental Consulting and Management, directing the firm’s offices in Dunwoody and Fayetteville, Georgia. He drove the growth of the Dunwoody location to revenues of more than $1 million within his first year. Dr. MacConnell further excelled on the staff of Dan Thompson DDS and Thomas Sparkman, DDS from 2011 to 2014. Soon thereafter, he studied dental implants with the Midwest Dental Implant Institute in Columbus, Ohio and completed their externship program and a fellowship in 2014, later finding much success as a dental implant surgeon with the Center for Family and Implant Dentistry in Bluff City. Dr. MacConnell has continued studying dental implantology internationally with the world’s top implant dentists at the Dr. Hilt Tatum Advanced Dental Implant Institute in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Dr. MacConnell attributes his success to “his drive for learning and thirst for knowledge.” He proudly cites his status as the first dentist in Eastern Tennessee to be certified in dental implants by the American Board of Oral Implantology and Implant Dentistry. In the coming years, Dr. MacConnell intends to teach and mentor the upcoming generation of dentists before entering his well-deserved retirement.
