Stuart Kaplan, Psychiatrist at Holcomb Behavioral Health, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in child psychiatry.
For over 50 years, Dr. Kaplan has provided superior care as a child psychiatrist. Participating in all phases of academic and clinical psychiatry, he has directed innovative inpatient and outpatient child psychiatry services in New York and Pennsylvania and has formulated clinical trials that help to deliver innovative treatments and founded family therapy services that lead to faster recoveries.
Dr. Kaplan obtained a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy from George Washington University, Washington in 1961 and followed with a medical doctorate from the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences in 1965. He then served an internship in pediatrics with the Jewish Hospital of Brooklyn from 1965 to 1966 and a residency in general psychiatry with the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia from 1966 to 1968. He continued with fellowships in child psychiatry with the Philadelphia Child Guidance Clinic (PCGC) at the University of Pennsylvania from 1968 to 1969 and with the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, from 1969 to 1970.
From 1970 to 1972, Dr. Kaplan served his country as a staff psychiatrist with the United States Naval Hospital, United States Navy Reserve in Bethesda, Maryland, attaining the rank of Lieutenant Commander.
Since 1972, Dr. Kaplan has provided excellent care as a child psychiatrist with the Philadelphia Child Guidance Clinic, Philadelphia General Hospital, Croxer Chester Medical Center, Philadelphia Child Mental Health Center and Northern Children’s Services. He has prospered as Director of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry with the Long Island Jewish Medical Center, Rockland Children’s Psychiatric Center, the Saint Louis University School of Medicine and the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, Penn State Health, Beginning in 2014, he has exclusively practiced with Holcomb Behavioral Health, Exton and Kennett Square, Pennsylvania.
Dr. Kaplan has equally flourished as an educator. He has served as an instructor in child psychiatry with the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences, assistant clinical professor of psychiatry with the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine, Stony Brook University and the Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons. Dr. Kaplan has excelled as professor of psychiatry and pediatrics with the Saint Louis University School of Medicine and currently as clinical professor of psychiatry with the Penn State College of Medicine.
After publishing dozens of learned papers in psychiatry journals, in 2011 Dr. Kaplan published “Your Child Does Not Have Bipolar Disorder” on the Praeger imprint, described in an online review as “an essential guide for clinicians and parents for understanding, diagnosing, and treating what is often mistakenly referred to as pediatric bipolar disorder.” Among the many honors he has received are the Psychiatrist of the Year Award from the State of Missouri, which Dr. Kaplan considers a career highlight; the Metropolitan School Mental Health Award; and the Great Thinkers in Child Psychiatry Award.
Dr. Kaplan was inspired to become a child psychiatrist when he worked as a camp counselor and noted the psychological difficulties and struggles with the campers under his tutelage. Though today his practice is largely confined to clinical work, in coming years Dr. Kaplan would like to continue writing when the opportunity presents itself.
