He initially obtained a Doctor of Medicine and a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Illinois prior to completing a residency at the University of Southern California and a fellowship at the University of California Los Angeles. During this time, he is honored to have graduated second in his class. Currently, at the Los Angeles Endocrinology, Weight Control, and Metabolic Center, he is proud to serve a diverse population ranging from birth to old age by offering a multi-disciplinary approach to the diagnosis and management of hormone disorders. Furthermore, he and his team blend the strengths of traditional western medicine with selective contributions from non-traditional health professional colleagues with a focus on family-centered holistic care.

Over the course of his career, Dr. Lavin has found notable success as the international chair of pediatric endocrinology for the American Academy of Clinical Endocrinology, the director of the Endocrinology, Metabolism and Diabetes Center for Children and Adults, a clinical professor of endocrinology and pediatrics and the director of clinical education in endocrinology at UCLA Medical School and the director of the Diabetes Care Center and the director of medical education at the Encino-Tarzana Regional Medical Center. Additionally, he has excelled as the editor of the Manual of Endocrinology and Metabolism, Published by Lippincott and the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Growth, Growth Hormone and Metabolism. Further supplementing his professional career, he has served as the director of both the Pediatric Endocrine Society and the West Coast Medical Society.

Though his career has been suffused with highlights, Dr. Lavin is most proud to have been a recipient of multiple Awards of the Fellowship as well as various specialty degrees in endocrinology, pediatrics and adult medicine. Moreover, he is gratified to have never lost a life over the span of his entire career. Looking toward the future, he aims to continue writing in the field. Along with his textbook that consists of five editions in 10 languages, his goal is to work on medicine books for professionals in non-medical fields who require assistance while communicating with doctors and medical staff.
