Prior to his current position, he served as a general medical officer in the Health Professions Scholarship Program in the Eighth Communications Battalion II Marine Expeditionary Force of the United States Navy at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina from 2004 to 2007. Between 1997 and 1999, Dr. Matsuyama served with the U.S. Navy at Camp Fallujah during Operation Iraqi Freedom, in addition to civilian work as a microbiology laboratory technician for Associated Laboratories in Orange, California.
Dr. Matsuyama earned a Bachelor of Arts in biological sciences from California State University, Fullerton in 1997 and a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in Maryland in 2003. He spent the next seven years completing an internship in osteopathic medicine and an anesthesiology residency at Grandview Hospital and Medical Center in Dayton, Ohio by 2010. Reflecting on his journey, Dr. Matsuyama attributes his success to his family, his colleagues, and his patients.
To remain abreast of his field, Dr. Matsuyama currently maintains professional affiliation with the Society of Cardiac Anesthesiologists, American Osteopathic College of Anesthesiologists, American Society of Anesthesiologists, American Osteopathic Association, American Medical Association, and the North Carolina Medical Society. He is decorated with a Fleet Marine Force Officer Qualification Pin and Global War on Terrorism Medal for his military service and was named Preceptor of the Year in 2018. Looking ahead, Dr. Matsuyama aims to continue offering the best practices for patient care and pain management. In his spare time, he enjoys skateboarding, hiking, golf, and paintball.
