Since 2019, Dr. Paez has been the Chief of the Infectious Diseases Division at the Baystate Medical Center Department of Medicine. A board-certified internal medicine provider and infectious disease specialist with clinical and research interests including the treatment of HIV and viral hepatitis, wound care, and healthcare technologies, he considers infectious disease to be one of the core areas of medical practice. Inspired by his father, an ophthalmologist, and his own desire for a career that allowed him to help others, Dr. Paez enrolled at the University of Santo Tomas in Manila, graduating magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in physical therapy in 1991 and his Doctor of Medicine degree in 1999. After completing a medical internship at the Santo Tomas University Hospital in 2000, he relocated to Ohio, spending the next four years as an internal medicine resident at the Cleveland Clinic.
Dr. Paez began his affiliation with Baystate Medical Center in 2004 as a fellow in infectious disease and clinical associate at the Tufts University School of Medicine. He accepted an assistant professor position at Tufts University in 2006, rising to adjunct assistant professor in 2016, and became assistant faculty at the University of Massachusetts Medical School – Baystate the same year. In 2012, Dr. Paez was named the director of the Infectious Disease Fellowship Program at Baystate Medical Center. Dr. Paez is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and the Infectious Diseases Society of America, and has been honored for his work with accolades including the Massachusetts Infectious Disease Society Maxwell Finland Award for Excellence in Research and the Edward H. Kass Award for Clinical Excellence. He attributes his success in medicine to hard work, grit, and empathy for patients, and is proud to have spent his career working to treat and understand often-marginalized diseases.
