Susan D. John, MD, FACR, Professor of Radiology and Chair of the Department of Diagnostic and Interventional Imaging at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors for dedication, achievements, and leadership in radiology.
Dr. John is an internationally known pediatric radiologist currently serving as a professor and chair of the Department of Diagnostic and Interventional Imaging at the University of Texas McGovern Medical School at Houston, where she has spent nearly the entirety of her career. Additionally, she is chief of adult and pediatric imaging services at Memorial Hermann Hospital TMC, Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital, and the Lyndon B. Johnson General Hospital in Houston, Texas. Dr. John has held the John S. Dunn Distinguished Chair in Radiology at UT McGovern Medical School Houston since 2004.
In her current roles, Dr. John is a passionate advocate of personalized care in radiology with a special focus on diagnostic imaging for young patients. She has been a leader in national initiatives to reduce unnecessary radiation exposure in pediatric imaging and increase awareness of appropriate diagnostic processes for many years. She served on the Alliance for Radiation Safety in Pediatric Imaging Steering Committee and was co-chair of the Image Gently subcommittee that created the Radiation Safety Checklist for radiologic technologists performing digital radiography in children. She continues to publish and advocates for judicious, evidence-based use of radiologic imaging in pediatric trauma and emergency care.
Finding great success throughout her career trajectory, Dr. John was the recipient of a Gold Medal from the Texas Radiological Society in 2020 and the Houstonia Top Doctors Award each year since 2013. She has also taken home the Ashbel Smith Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Texas Medical Branch in 2019, a Gold Medal from the American Society of Emergency Radiology in 2015, and was presented with a Dean’s Teaching Excellence Award from the McGovern Medical School at UTHealth each year from 2000 to 2003 and again in both 2005 and 2006.
Dr. John earned a Bachelor of Science and a Bachelor of Arts, cum laude, from the University of Texas at Austin in 1974, followed by a Doctor of Medicine in diagnostic radiology from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston in 1984. She went on to complete a residency in diagnostic radiology and a fellowship in pediatric radiology at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston by 1989.
